If you have sync, and there is a problem anywhere, Shut Down Sync Immediately On All Devices to prevent the problem from spreading. Once the problem is fixed, perform the same repair on all computers/profiles before using sync again.
[v57+] Places Maintenance is built into Firefox.
Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.
You will find Places Database near the bottom. Press the Verify Integrity button.
If any errors are reported, check this link: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/fix-bookmarks-and-history-will-not-be-functional
The places.sqlite file contains your History and Bookmarks. And it looks like it is corrupted.
Type about:support<enter> in the address bar.
Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Locate the above file. Then rename or delete it. Restart Firefox. The browser should then create a new place.sqlite and recover your bookmarks from the backup files.
Note: Your history is not backed up and will be lost.
How do I shut down sync? I entered about:support. I found Places Database & pressed Verify Integrity. This is what appeared: > Task: checkIntegrity - Unable to check places.sqlite integrity: Error: Error(s) encountered during statement execution: database disk image is malformed > Task: invalidateCaches - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: checkCoherence - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: expire - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: originFrecencyStats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: vacuum - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: stats - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task. > Task: _refreshUI - The task queue was cleared by an error in another task.
I have no idea what any of this means & am totally lost. I do not understand any of the further instructions at all. It's all way beyond my level. This problem has been for awhile & it seems to have started in relation to using Pocket. I stopped using Pocket & think I removed it from the computer yet the problem persists. Help for a dummy would be & is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.
This can be caused by a problem with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite databases in the Firefox profile folder.
If errors are reported with "Verify Integrity", close and restart Firefox or reboot and retry.
If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.
- keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created
You lose the history when a new places.sqlite is created.

You can use the button on the "Help -> More Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
- Help -> More Troubleshooting Information -> Profile Folder/Directory:
Windows: Open Folder; Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder - https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/profiles-where-firefox-stores-user-data
Way too complex for my little brain. This is more confusing than the first response which was way over my head. Thanks, anyways.
To all the helpers:
Since I do not understand the replies (too technical for my level); it sure would be helpful to do a simple explanation & step by step walk through in layman's terms for the technically challenged .
What does layman’s terms mean? Simple terms to explain a complex issue so that the average person can easily understand it. Speaking in layman’s terms is not to dumb down. It is to educate using terms that an average person can easily digest. Simple words need to be used first to define what the big words mean.
I'd like to be able to utilize your support.

Please re-read https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1336199#answer-1412915
The instructions are near the bottom.
I am totally lost in all of the jargon. Is there a way to get any SIMPLIFIED help? Sure would be nice if there was verbal assistance.
