I have three email accounts linked into Thunderbird 78.7.1. Two of these work perfectly, including one Yahoo account, but new messages on my main Yahoo account will not update on Thunderbird, which displays the message: 'The DELE command did not succeed. Error marking a message as deleted. Mail server pop.mail.yahoo.com responded: Too many requests.' I know that Thunderbird is signed into the Yahoo account and it does try to download new messages, but always fails. Any ideas how to get round this problem? I should add that I have over 22k messages in the inbox so would prefer not to delete everything and start again!

Chosen solution

Update I have resolved the problem.

  1. 1 Create a new local folder 'Yahoo mail backup'
  2. 2 Move all emails in the Thunderbird inbox to the new local folder
  3. 3 Close Thunderbird and delete the inbox and inbox.msf files in the profile folder
  4. 4 Make a backup copy of the popstate.dat file
  5. 5 Edit the original popstate.dat file to remove all records. Don't delete the header lines.
  6. 6 Restart Thunderbird which will then recreate the inbox and inbox.msf files and download all records from the yahoo mail inbox to the Thunderbird inbox. This took several hours to complete
  7. 7 Older emails that were no longer in the yahoo mail inbox are still accessible in Thunderbird in the backup local folder.
