I regret very much that the lightning calender can't be trusted any more, even since several months. is there a chance that this will be fixed? I trusted the reminders. Best regards Konrad

Wow, that was quick. Just posted details of my issue yesterday. Today, opened Thunderbird, and it said "updating". Now I'm on version 78.8.1 (32-bit). And now part of the problem reported above seems to have (I hope permanently) vanished. The Events that HAD lost the Edited versions of Recurring Events seem to have regained the Edited versions. The non-edited recurring events that had vanished haven't re-appeared, but I'm hoping that now if I re-create them, they will no longer vanish. Time will tell. I'll post again after a month to confirm that result, either way.

Please clarify the exact issue / behavior.

Is it "recurring tasks are all being marked incomplete"? If so, it will be fixed in 78.8.0 coming up soon.

Thank you, Wayne, for answering.

My problem is, that reminders for birthdays are irregularly erased. I am not seeing any rules which are lost, which are kept. E.g. since yesterday 3 out of 10 are lost. I am using these data for years. The chances started maybe one year ago, but I am not sure about that.

The exact problem that is being reported on this thread is not clear to me but I think I am having a similar problem.

This is what has happened to me:

  • I use tasks to set reminders about stuff I should be doing - so on the start date they appear in the Thunderbird Reminder window on startup
  • I am not very good at executing these tasks in a timely manner so they tend to accumulate in the Reminder window over time
  • So when I shutdown Thunderbird I also need to shutdown the Reminder window. When I restart Thunderbird the Reminder window reopens, normally with all the outstanding tasks displayed
  • What has happened a couple of times recently is that the Reminder window has not reopened on restart and on investigation not only have the reminders disappeared, but the tasks themselves have been deleted from the task tab in Thunderbird. Both times I guess I lost maybe 8-12 reminders and tasks.
  • I have tried to reproduce this problem without success in case I was doing something wrong - for example pressing Dismiss All does not cause this problem. But nothing I tried deleted the underlying tasks.
  • I don't think I did anything different on shutdown between the occasions it worked normally and the times my tasks were deleted . So at the moment it looks to me like some kind of intermittent problem.
  • I can't tie this for certain to any specific release of Thunderbird (I am using 78.7.1 at the moment) but both times this has happened have been in the last month or two. Before that time I had been working like this for several years without losing any tasks.

Clearly it is annoying to lose these tasks and having to try and remember the lost ones. (If I could remember them all, I wouldn't need the reminders :-)).

I have also been trying without success to find a junk folder / recycle bin for deleted tasks. Does this exist?

Thanks for any help and/or suggestions about anything I might be doing wrong.

This is a better description of the problem, but no solution! My regards Konrad

Hi Konrad

I'm assuming that this problem will continue to happen to me at random intervals.

To make it easier to recreate lost tasks when it does happen I have started backing up my tasks to an HTML file.

This is not really a solution to the problem, but at least I can recreate the tasks by opening the backup file in a browser and then just copy and paste the task details to new tasks. Now I don't need to try and remember what was in all the missing tasks!

Good luck!

Hans

Having the same problem. Events that were there for weeks just disappear. Below is a log of my actions in case of any value. I'd had the problem for a month or two before starting to keep the log for better details than from memory. 10:35 PM 2/18/2021 Recurring event that had been still present until a day or two ago has now disappeared (again). It was a recurring on the 22nd each month. I had edited the current month a few weeks ago. It showed in Reminders until (I think) yesterday. Maybe day before. It was set with a "one week before" reminder. Set to recur "forever". Monthly. Thunderbird shows as 78.7.1 (32-bit). I believe this started an update or two ago. Maybe around 1/3/2021 (I created a "Firefox problems" folder on that date, but didn't put anything in it till now. Had just re-created the events, thought I was done with the issue. Another event due 2/27/2021 is still present, with no modified version of "this event". So I'll try seeing what happens to that one.

I'm recreating the disappeared event for the 22nd now, with a modif version again. Will see what it does also. 11:20 PM 2/18/2021 Finished re-creating 22nd recurring; captured the screens throughout in this folder. - 12:40 AM 2/22/2021 The 22nd event is still showing up in reminders. I opened details, made no changes. Still good. - 9:09 PM 2/23/2021 The 22nd event is still showing up in reminders. I just clicked the completed button on the reminder, and it disappeared, as it should. It still shows up on the calendar, this month (past) and next month, as it should, with the correct info when hovering. Past event shows edits, next event, no edits. - 1:34 PM 2/26/2021 Opening firefox, get a screen indicating that it updated. URL says "oldversion=85.0.2". About now says version is 86.0 (64 bit). - 4:04 PM 2/26/2021 Just opened Tbird, notice that the end of month $400 event is now GONE. Was there a day or two ago. No future or past trace of it. WTF. Recreated it AGAIN. One week reminder, due 26th, recurs monthly. - 3:56 PM 2/28/2021 Just added amount to the 22nd cc bill reminder for March 22. Thought I had done it before, maybe not. Amount $1750. - 2:06 PM 3/2/2021 I notice that the Mar 22nd cc bill shows NO amount, and seems to have never been edited. Putting the amount in AGAIN. Checked every detail after, all seems correct with edited and all occurrences. - 7:36 PM 3/9/2021 I notice that the Mar 22nd cc bill shows NO amount, and now seems to have never been edited. Putting the amount in AGAIN. Checked every detail after, all seems correct with edited and all occurrences. Also the $400 EOM reminder has disappeared from the reminders popup. Was there a day or two ago. And it appears to be gone from ALL months now, past present and future. It had never been edited, had only the "All Occurrences" original entry. No recent Tbird updates. Last was Version 78.7.1, first offered to channel users on February 5, 2021, installed Feb 8th. 7:46 PM 3/9/2021 I just found some Log enablers in the advanced config. calendar.debug.log;true (was false) calendar.debug.log.verbose;true (was false) Don't yet know where the logs can be found. Maybe in the Error Console? Having a hard time interpreting it, and it doesn't seem to show dates, just times, and not sequential. But maybe because I just started logging today?

  • If anything I can do to help resolve the issue, LMK.

I added 2 images, but they don't show up in Preview Reply, so not sure if they are attached or not. Bob J.

On my Earthlink home page, all of my birthday reminders open when I access my home page. I no longer receive reminders for upcoming birthdays. The dictionary portion of the home page also is expanded. I don't know how to remedy this problem. Earthlink was contacted and said it was a browser issue. Same thing happens when I open in Safari.

I've had this problem too, but have been waiting for a fix. got an update today today and it's still not fixed, but I note a possibly different problem with the alerts. Seems an alert gets posted at the same time the event starts minus the number of days or hours the reminders were set for. I'm running Manjaro Mate with the option to have multiple desktops available to me. When the Alert happens the popup arrives in the Virtual Desktop I'm using at the time. If I'm in a Desktop that IS NOT the same one that Thunderbird and Lightening are in, it pops up in that window. Usually I click on the left icon at the top of the Alert window and "move" it to the Virtual Desktop contains Thunderbird. If I switch to the Desktop, the Alert will be there. However, if I then move to another Virtual Desktop and then back to I put the Alert, it will be gone. It also seems to have the same failure if, by chance I was working on the same Virtual Desktop that houses the Thunderbird window, move to another Virtual Window, do some work on it, then return to the Thunderbird containing Desktop. So it appears the loss of an Alert might be a function of switching Virtual Desktops.

The last time Alerts stayed posted until I "Dismiss"ed them was when it used to give me a double alert for each active Alert, so that might suggest where to look in the code for some change implemented to fix the problem of the "double alert."

I'm not sure this is the same problem - it is definitely not the same problem I was having. 2 differences - I have never used Virtual Desktops; and for me it was the tasks themselves that were getting lost, not just the reminders.

I was also not sure about the published solution - I was not using recurring tasks which were mentioned in all the bug reports I saw around the issue fixed in 78.8.1.

But having said that I have not seen the problem since I upgraded to 78.8.1 (and beyond).

So (cross fingers, touch wood, ...) my symptoms were another manifestation of the problem that was fixed and have now also gone away for ever!

Hi,

I have the same problem. I posted it last week on another forum, because I had no access to this forum. Today I have the access.

This is the post and the description of my situation: https://support.mozilla.org/de/questions/1333078

Last week I used the latest version of Thunderbird Portable (78.9.1), and the events were deleted with this version. Today I use the next version 78.10.0. But I am not sure if the problem is solved.

There were issues regarding edit all occurances which was a problem with inability to edit. There was a fix issued in 78.8.1

But I'm concerned there is another bug which is quite specific and I'm trying to get information from the community.

Has anyone noticed if the Event seems to get deleted if one of the following occurs:

  • You get a pop up reminder and you select to dismiss
  • You get pop up reminder and you just close pop up without selecting anything
  • You get a pop up reminder which you ignore, leave visible and exit Thunderbird.

If you get a pop up reminder and make any other selection like snooze for a day and it deletes the event - I need to know.

If you have any information, please report what OS you use, what version of Thunderbird, whether it is portable version or not. What you selected with that pop up reminder. Whether this is just Lightning home calendar or whether you are using CalDav etc.

All help in nailing down this specific bug would be appreciated. https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1683321

I'm not sure I can add much to my previous posts about this subject.

A summary:

  • I was not using Events - I was losing Tasks
  • I was not losing individual Tasks - on the occasions when the problem happened I lost every Task that was displayed in the Reminders window at the point I shut down Thunderbird
  • I don't know whether the problem happened when I closed or when I opened Thunderbird. The Tasks were there before I closed Thunderbird and had gone the next time I opened it
  • The problem was intermittent. I tested various sequences of actions - including those you suggested - but I could never reproduce the problem.
  • I experienced this problem when I was running 78.7.1.
  • I have not seen the problem since I upgraded to 78.8.1. I am now running 78.10.0.
  • I am not really using Calendars at all - I just use Tasks as a sort of todo list. The Calendar displayed on the Tasks is Thunderbird Home.

I'm not sure that this description will help you - but let me know if there is any more information I can supply.
