Import emails from previous install's file system to new install of TB
Hi moz://a community !
I need to find a way to import emails from a previous install's file system, to new install of TB.
Here's some more context :
I recently had to format a computer for a friend. He needed to keep all his mails from the past years and these were stored locally, since his profile was set in POP3 mode. Most of these old emails had previously been imported from an even older Outlook install. Unfortunately, I had no time to lookup for a "clean" export/import feature, and did not find one at first sight, so what I did was simply copy/pasting TB's file system to an external drive before formatting the device. ( C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\<etc> )
My friend's computer is now running Windows 10 with the latest version of TB installed and I need to import his old emails from the old file system.
I can find the mails in the old file system, open them even in notepad to see the details etc. but part of these seem encrypted or in a format that notepad does not support.
I can't find an import feature on TB that would allow me to access these files. How could I achieve this ?
In advance, thanks for your help !
Cheers and a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all,
Thibault

On win 10 computer: When Thunderbird was installed and first run, it created a directory automatically here: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\Profiles\'profile name' folder.
At this point Exit Thunderbird. Locate Roaming folder: C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird Delete the default 'Thunderbird' folder.
Now access the backup copy as per your info :copy/pasting TB's file system to an external drive before formatting the device. ( C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming\<etc> ) In that Roaming' folder will be a 'Thunderbird' folder - Copy that 'Thunderbird' folder Then paste it into the C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Roaming folder to replace the deleted one. So in effect you will be using the same old files.
Start Thunderbird.
