Messages in inbox disappear into spam box when I select them

more options

Hi, I've been plagued by an issue for a couple years in Thunderbird and keep hoping an update will fix it but no such luck. So hoping someone has some sort of solution.

Frequently when selecting messages to read in my inbox, it disappears into the spam box. It had not been tagged as spam initially and suddenly was moved to spam only as I try to select it. This happens randomly, and just as likely with frequent correspondents as new ones. When I go to the spam box to retrieve I mark them as not spam, but that doesn't seem to guarantee the same correspondent won't be so tagged again "after the fact" so to speak.

This seems like a major program flaw that should have been addressed 20 updates ago but for me its been a constant problem.

But is it a flaw at all.

I have dealt with a lot of folks in the past decade saying almost exactly what you are. It was never Thunderbird moving their mail. But the causes vary over time and there is no "this is it answer". Sometime it is the mail server applying it's idea of what is spam and forcing it on you. Yahoo in particular do this. Not helpful at all.

Other time it has been addon that wear only sort of compatible with a new version that messed things up. Other times it has been anti spam/scam tools in anti virus product that have messed things up. Which it will be in your case I have no idea. But I actually doubt it is Thunderbird doing it just based on past experiences.

  • Restart Thunderbird with add-ons disabled (Thunderbird Safe Mode). On the Help menu, click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled". If Thunderbird works like normal, there is an Add-on which might even be injected from the anti virus product and so not listed in Thunderbird interfering with normal operations. You will need to re-enable add-ons one at a time until you locate the offender or check setting in your anti virus.

Thanks Matt. I checked and I have no add-ons in my thunderbird setup. I use Norton antivirus and spam filtering via that is specifically set to OFF. My mail server is comcast, which does have its own spam filtering. But this problem happens after I have downloaded the e-mail from their server. It's a tough thing for me to test as it doesn't happen often, maybe once a week, but then it might occur several times in one day.

So I think the problem must originate within Thunderbird, but as you say might have something to do with other software I might have on my system.

It's just bizarre that Thunderbird decides after routing downloaded mail to the inbox rather than to junk, to later reclassify it as junk when its selected in the inbox....and then moving it to the junk box. I presume that is not some option in the program.
