Hi,

I've been using Thunderbird for a while, and recently, I noticed that I wasn't getting emails, even though I would never receive errors, and statusbar would show connected to <server>. I could send fine, but not receive, and this for both of my accounts. I removed both accounts, went to re-add the Gmail one—I entered my email and password, clicked continue, it offered imap or pop, I tried both, clicked done, and it always says: Unable to log in at server. Probably wrong configuration, username or password. I saw another question and the answer said to turn on work offline, set up things manually, I tried that, too, and it doesn't ask me for the details when I force get messages, but it did ask when I went to send, and I logged in, but it gets stuck on the sending screen, and I still do not receive anything. My cookies in preferences are enabled, and less secure access is turned on, as well as pop and imap on Google. I tried reinstalling, removing all passwords, all cookies, I couldn't find a way to restore all settings to the factory ones, tried again, and absolutely the same thing happens. I then tried the other one which is not Gmail (doesn't use auth2), and it, also, refuses to login. I added both accounts to Windows 10's mail app just to see if it'd work, and they both work just fine in there. I made sure to add Thunderbird to allowed programs in firewall, I made sure my info is correct, my connection, I don't understand what's going on. It started happening a few days ago I think? I tried setting the security.tls.version.min to 1, still no go.

Using Thunderbird 78.5.1 (64-bit)

Would appreciate any help.

If you are using ESET/NOD32 security/AV then probability is very high it is causing your problems. According to their forums, you should temporarily disable SSL until they solve the problem per https://support.eset.com/en/kb3126-disable-ssl-filtering-in-eset-windows-products?ref=esf - the problem is being reported by dozens of users https://forum.eset.com/topic/26517-problems-with-thunderbird-and-imaps/ https://forum.eset.com/discover/

re :I tried setting the security.tls.version.min to 1, still no go.

That would not effect gmail as they are using the up to date protocols.

gmail imap - needs cookies enabled.

  • server name: imap.gmail.com
  • port: 993
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: OAuth2
  • User name : full email address

SMTP - outgoing server

  • server name: smtp.gmail.com
  • port: 465
  • Connection Security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: OAuth2
  • User name : full email address

You would get prompted to logon by gmail to allow Thunderbird access, at which point a token is saved in Thunderbird which it will use for future access.

@Toad-Hall Thank you so much! I would've never thought it would be the av. You are a savior.
