Thunderbird 78.2.2 very slow for 10 minutes after startup. Cpu hog when started online (15-20% CPU and flashes of 'Not responding' but nothing to download) but runs normally when started offline and then switched to online. (Win10, 3 imap and one pop3)

Hello, My Thunderbird 32bit installation upon Microsoft 10 64bit installation just upgraded itself to 7.2.2 and produced a severe performance problem after initial startup. The response to attempts to navigate through the folders is very slow. The Microsoft Task Manager shows that Thunderbird is constantly busy 15-20% Cpu usage and flashes of 'Not responding' although the program has nothing to download.

There 4 accounts configured (3 imap and one pop3) and there are lots of folders with stored emails. There is one Lightening calendar configured.

The performance issue continues for about 10 minutes and then disappears so the system becomes as responsive as it was before the upgrade i.e. instantaneous.

I cannot tell you what release I was on before the upgrade. Any suggestions Patrick

Hi Krellan, Thanks for adding your voice. Not sure how many people are affected by this performance drag, I suspect probably only a few as the later releases have not attended to it. If you wish to downgrade, someone else on the list prompted that 78.1.1 did not display performance issues. I have found, thanks to a suggestion for diagnosing the problem, that starting Thunderbird in offline mode and then enabling online mode can deliver long periods of usage without experiencing the performance issue. But I am using 32 bit and may have a different configuration to you so no guarantees. Regards Patrick

Hi abird5806, Yes I checked today and my Thunderbird is also on 78.3.2 and still suffering from the same issue. Could you confirm whether you are on 32 or 64 bit version? I am on 32bit and was wondering if it was worth the trying to switch to 64. Thanks Regards Patrick

64 bit will make no difference.

We expect 78.4.0 to be out next week with further improvements.

Hi Krellan, Yes as you will have seen in this chain of emails there are a few people who have experienced this same problem. the user rmrubin posted that 78..1.1 solved his problem. I have found starting in offline mode and then enabling online mode will circumvent the cpu hogging for some periods of time. Regards Patrick

By the way I do still get the benefit of no performance issue on starting in offline mode. However it will eventually at some point degrade in performance but the restart in offline does defer enough for the software to be usable for long enough to get the essential work done.

That's because one of the performance issues is related to the retrieval of new mail. 78.4.0 will have some fixes in this area.

Hi Wayne, Thank you very much for your explanations. Much appreciated. Look forward to 78.4. Regards Patrick

Hi Wayne, I have a shared profiles on https://share.firefox.dev/3cmkvSg

This profile reveals almost entirely caldav activity, related to a calendar. Definitely an issue in there.

I originally suspected something to imap. To test one possible theory in that realm, when your system CPU is low and no account activity is occurring, double click an account (to collapse the folders) wait a few seconds and then double click again. Repeat for each imap account. Do you encounter extreme slowness?

when it is being slow do you see anything in tools > developer > error console ? (you may need to start the console before it gets slow)

HI Wayne, I have just carried out the following: a) clicked twice on each of the accounts, as requested, collapsing the folder lists. T b) Disabled all calendars. Home and office. I did this upon 78.4 which I loaded this morning. Initially after carrying out a) and b) there was no difference in cpu usage. I stopped and restarted and Thunderbird's cpu usage was low and disappeared from the top processes in the task manager list.

I then opened up the accounts again so underlying folder structures could be seen and cpu usage remained low, TB not appearing in process list.

I then opened calendar tab and then re-enabled my staff calendar. The CPU went up to 15-20% usage and stayed there.

So this seems to support your supposition that it is my calendar which is causing the pain.

I will update again next week.

Hi Wayne, I have been running for a few hours now with the calendars disabled and TB is behaving itself with low CPU usage. Definitely the calendar causing the problem. In the past I did not disable the calendar but just removed the calendar tab and this did not make any difference. Presumably removing the calendar tab display does not stop the calendar processing. This is where I probably mislead you before. Apologies for that. Thanks for your perseverance. Regards Patrick

My TB seems to have updated to 78.4 overnight. It is now virtually unusable.

Firstly, the normal startup layout was totally covered by the Mozilla update page. Once I bot rid of that, I had what resembled the old layout.

I have about 6 accounts. 5 Gmail, one Outlook. Windows 10 64bit. TB is 32bit

While in one account, I am unable to immediately switch between folders. Say from inbox to sent or vice versa. If I wait a bit then pass my mouse up and down the list of messages, they slowly start to appear, but only if i move the mouse up and down over the message list.

I am unable to switch immediately from one inbox to one in another account. Nothing happens. I haven't tried waiting for over 5 minutes.

I tried safe mode. That takes me back to a working version. But as soon as I re-boot, I am back to the unusable new version. I tried disabling add-ons (I don't think I have any) but that made no difference.

What Do I do next? I have been happy with TB, but in past month or so it has got slower and slower and now hardly works.

ADDED: - I have found that if I click on Quick Filter after I try and switch from one folder to another, then the related messages do appear in the message list. What is the Quick Filter and why is that now necessary? - I hardly use Calendars. I looked for a way to disable, but nothing shows up in add-ons. I think I do get a Today pane, if I so choose and it does have a few entries. If this is a problem, how do I delete all calendars?

Hi Ourmail2008, My performance problem seemed to be related to the calendar. But I am using Lightning and subscribe to my company's calendar whereas if you are not really using calendar then perhaps you do not have Lightning. If you are then to disable the calendar. Goto Calendar view and in left hand pane right click on whatever calendars you have, this will produce a drop down menu with properties on the bottom. Enter properties menu option . There is an option to disable the calendar. Take that and then exit.

See attachment for where to click on the calendar view. N.B your calendars will not show the word 'enable' but it will after you have disabled it. Regards Patrick

Hi Ourmail2008, My performance problem seemed to be related to the calendar.

I had no add-on calendar. There was one linked to Outlook, but I disabled that. Now no calendars on any accounts. But problem persists.

To summarize, Layout has column with accounts and folders down the left side. Rest of screen display a list of messages that depends on which account or folder I have pointed to.

Lets say I choose ourmail@gmail.com and point and click on Inbox. Result: Nothing happens. Now if I click on QuickFilter or scroll my mouse up through where the list of messages should be, then the messages appear. They also appear if I switch to browser and then back to TB.

If I now I click on the Sent folder, again nothing happens. The inbox messages stay. Again, if I click on QuickFilter or scroll mouse, then I get the sent messages.

Same type of behavior if I switch from one account inbox to another - no messages unless I use QuickFilter or scroll mouse.

Having discovered these work arounds, I can read my emails. But unless this can be fixed, probably have to look for another solution. Hard to imagine I am only one having these problems.

Hi ourmail2008, It sounds like you have a different issue to me as what you describe with the quick filter and the moving the scroll bar causing the messages to burst into life are not symptoms I experienced. However you might want to try what gave me some benefit before I discovered the issue with the calendar and start the thunderbird program in offline mode. This starts the program with no network access, which obviously is no good, but then when I clicked the online button at the bottom left of the Thunderbird window it reopens the network activity and worked without a problem for a time.

This was so effective for me that I created a batch file with the following line

C:\"Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Thunderbird"\thunderbird.exe -offline

and ran it instead of normally clicking on my Thunderbird icon. On your system Thunderbird might reside in a different folder so change accordingly.

Also it might be an idea to check you are having cpu problems by running the Task Manager and looking at the processes to see how much cpu Thunderbird is taking up. Click on the top of the cpu column until it shows all processes in descending order of cpu usage figures. If this is new to you, the Task Manager is found by pressing <Ctrl><Alt><Delete> and selecting Task Manager from the menu.

It might also be an idea to start a new thread with your problems as they do sound different to the one I described above. Best of luck Patrick

Thanks for that information. I checked cpu usage and it was under 10% and TB used 0 to 5%. Can't see that as being the problem. I tried going off-line, but didn't see a difference. I didn't try the batch file.

In frustration, I uninstalled Thunderbird. I will try re-installing but if that does not help, set up gmail or outlook as my main email client.

I did post in a more relevant thread, but no responses there.

After uninstalling TB 78.4 using win10 settings, I tried to install a fresh version. I downloading Thunderbird Setup 78.4.exe, from Mozilla site. But it will not run. Tried several times. It gives an error message from 7-Zip: 'Can not create temp folder archive'

I will try starting a new question, but wasted too much time on this already.

temp folder issues would not be caused by thunderbird.

It is a Thunderbird problem, if the install file will not run on an otherwise standard Win 10 computer and full instructions are not provided.

As it is, I resolved the problem. The install download had to be run as Administrator. I didn't see that anywhere. Seeing it started with "A", It just happened to be first item when I right clicked on the file.

I never got any response to the problems 78.4 caused. I will give it one more try now it has installed. I suspected I would have to set up all the accounts again but they appeared as before in the re-installed TB.

But problem is as before.

@ourmail, based on your description I am surprised you posted in a topic about performance issues. You more likely would get attention to your issue if you posted in a new topic.

Anyway, "no messages unless I use QuickFilter or scroll mouse" sounds like a graphics issue.

A. What type of computer and graphics device? B. Did you try starting Thunderbird in safe mode? Help > Restart C. Try disabling hardware acceleration at Options > type in "accel"

> The install download had to be run as Administrator.

Well, yes, if you don't have install rights on the machine, then yes you must run it as administrator. Again, that's not a Thunderbird restriction. (Thunderbird updates however have a helper application that work around the UAC restrictions)
