Chosen solution

You have a couple of options.

If you want Firefox to open a Private Browsing window, but want to still have the option to make a new regular window, you can add the -private-window command line option to the shortcut that you use to open Firefox.

Otherwise, you can set Firefox to only use Private Browsing mode. That can be done from the Privacy & Security section of the Firefox settings. If you scroll down to History and change to Use custom settings for history, you can enable Always use private browsing mode.

As a side note, if you enable the Always use private browsing mode option, the purple mask does not display in the browser windows or the new tab page.

Hope this helps.
