It sounds like you have a third party program that has taken over your search engine, home page, and/or the default new tab page. Fortunately, this can be remedied easily:

  1. Click the menu button The image "fx57menu" does not exist. and choose Add-ons.
  2. In the Add-ons Manager tab, select the Extensions panel.
  3. Select the toolbar you wish to remove.
  4. Click the Remove button.
  5. Click "Restart now" if it pops up. Your tabs will be saved and restored after the restart.

It could be Safer Search.

Type about:addons<enter> in the address bar to open your Add-ons Manager. Hot key; (<Control> [Mac=<Command>] <Shift> A)

In the Add-ons Manager, on the left, select Extensions.

Also remove SafeSearch, SearchAssist Incognito, FileConverter Addon, SearchLock, DiscreteSearch, WebSearch, Findwide Search Engine, securedsearch

Now do the same in the computer’s Programs Folder.

Windows: Start > Control Panel > Uninstall Programs. Mac: Open the Applications folder. Linux: Check your user manual.

Hello wdsautter,

In addition to the above posted replies   (and I will be nice) :

Your system details show one dodgy extension :   "Safer Search 1.0.1 ";   would you please remove it ?

To do so, you'll need to go to the Firefox menu (≡) <big>→</big> Preferences <big>→</big> Add-ons <big>→</big> Extensions.

Then   (just to be on the safe side),   would you please run the malware scans that are listed in this article :
