How do I make the address bar stop being big? It started a few days ago and is very annoying. Can it be an option in settings please?

Chosen solution

Go to about:config and change browser.urlbar.openViewOnFocus browser.urlbar.update1 browser.urlbar.update1.interventions browser.urlbar.update1.searchTips

However, do note that eventually we might remove these settings so you'll have to use the new urlbar at some point in the future

Thank you, it being bigger is kind of nice but it makes my bookmark toolbar harder to use. I wish it wouldn't expand into that space.

I came back here to see if firefox had put a switch to turn off this horrid BUG (bad feature) judging by the posts I would say firefox team have alienated more than a few users. I kept doing the patches to remove this thing and was happy until a newer version and had to do it all over again and again. I haven't updated and have prevented FF from checking versions, but have been using Chrome more and more with better load times.

Please put a switch in so that those who dislike this can switch it off and it will stay off, don't get like Micro$soft and force things on people, especially when it's unpopular. Give users the choice.

Firefox 63+ has support for "@media (prefers-reduced-motion)" and you can modify the ui.prefersReducedMotion on the about:config page to enable or block some animations. In Firefox 78+ this includes the location bar breakout. In Fireofx 80+ this will replace the tab loading indicator by an hourglass.

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I accept the risk!" to continue.
