I worked with Spectrum quite a bit on this problem, and could not resolve. Receive is fine, but send failed just after updating. I went through the checklist on your site, including turning off firewalls. I did notice a possible "rogue" suggestion for a "default" port number on outgoing SMTP server which does not match either your documents or Spectrum - it was 465. The one time I tried that permutation of "send" I received a warning that the certificate did not match, so I canceled the send. I thought I should mention this because it could be a result of virus activity. You can see this in my uploaded image. I would appreciate any information which can resolve the problem.

Try these settings for the outgoing server: mobile.charter.net Connection security SSL/TLS on port 587 authentication = normal password User name = email address

Port 465 is the port no. used for SSL/TLS, which you selected.

The real question is what settings do Spectrum require as per their information? Please post that information here. There is no point guessing about the correct settings, or trying arbitrary combinations of settings.

The one time I tried that permutation of "send" I received a warning that the certificate did not match

If 'that permutation' were the Spectrum required settings, please post a screenshot of the cert error.

Christ1,

Thank you for the quick reply. I took a screenshot with that 465 port setting and SSL/TLS setting and have posted it here.

One thing I should mention, which may be complicating things is that Spectrum bought Charter, who was my original ISP, and they are in a merging scenario which I believe may have led to some varying comments from their technical support staff as I called back multiple times. For instance, I had been using a POP server setting and when I updated Thunderbird and lost the ability to send email, they wanted me to change to one of 3 possibilities, depending on who I spoke with. One said I could keep POP, one said that they had recently decommissioned a POP server, one said that I could have POP or IMAP, and one said that I needed to change to mobile.charter.net....

I want to keep a POP server, I think, because I both want to manage all emails from my desktop, but read and delete some from my phone without deleting them off of the server. This allows me to control backups on hard drive backups for 10 years as we are required to do, but from what I can read about IMAP, it may not be the best solution for me even though companies seem to be migrating away from it.

I look forward to any light you can shed on this.

Inspect the certificate - see the attached screenshot for instructions. Who's the issuer of the cert, and for whom was it issued?

Please post a screenshot of the Certificate Viewer window with the 'Issuer' and 'Issued To' information visible.

Christ1,

Again, thanks for this assistance.

I have posted the certificate "view" for you.

You're trying to access the server pop.charter.net, while the cert has been issued to mail.charter.net. This is what Thunderbird is complaining about.

In any case, your problem is about sending, but you're trying to access the server pop.charter.net. POP is the protocol for receive messages. SMTP is the protocol for sending messages So I doubt the server name for the outgoing server (SMTP) is correct.

For SMTP typically these combinations are being used: Connection security SSL/TLS, port 465, or Connection security STARTTLS, port 587

As said before, Spectrum/Charter should be able to give you an authoritative answer what the correct server name and settings should be. I'd expect they do have a support web site where this information can be obtained.

I just tried mail.charter.net for the SMTP server name, with port 465 and SSL/TLS set, and it was rejected with the same error message I got the first few times that I had the problem.

Of course, I agree that they should be able to give an authoritative answer, but for the reasons cited earlier, there may actually be reasons for their differing opinions with the company in transition and switching equipment - and possibly personnel.

Christ1,

Well, that worked. However, even though I have signed in with my password to receive email, it appears that I am going to have to type in my password on the first "Send". I did not have to do that before.

Tell Thunderbird to remember the password for the new outgoing server. There's a checkbox in the password prompt pop-up.

Christ1,

Well, you solved the problem! Thank you so much for the kind attention to this. I have been on it 3 days now, off and on, and you have just made my life much easier having resolved this conundrum.
