I transferred, successfully, my emails from an old computer to a new one. However, I has used the new one, briefly, and had some important emails that I did not want to lose. I thought that I would be given a choice to merge old with new but the result was that when I go into ...AppData/Roaming/Thunderbird/Profiles... I see TWO files: one that is identical to the one in the iold computer and another which I assume contains the emails I had in the new computer and have now disappeared.

How do I access that other file: xxxxxxxx.default  ?

I may have the answer but I'm afraid of testing it, should i lose all my emails!

If I go into the TB programme and AccountSettings and then select the account I am interested in and change the LocalDirectory from the shown Profile to the other that hopefully has the emails in th enew computer written before the transfer, will I be able to read those and then return to where I was with the transferred data, Is that all I have to do?

If you do that it will almost certainly end in tears.

I use this add-on to access multiple profiles. https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/profileswitcher/

Or you could use the import export add-on to import the mail in one profile to the other.

https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/

Or you could use the profile manager switch to invoke the profile manager when starting Thunderbird. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_Manager

Thank you Matt

I am going to try the Profile Manager, but to be on safe side I intend to backup what I now have in the new computer to the old one without losing the date there. I take it that if I transfer just as I did before following thr instructions in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/moving-thunderbird-data-to-a-new-computer I will end up with a Thunderbisr foldwer with TWO Profiles in the old computer without upsetting the data that's already there (the one that was trabnsferred to the new) as the Profile name will be the same. Is that right?

Is that right?

Yes, but I really would suggest either of the other options. I listed them in my preferred order.

Hi Matt

I now have the Addon installed but it seems that I also need a "ProfileManager.

I found it but now it seems I have to create the TWO profiles as all there is there is something called "profile"

Hi

I need help before I mess it all up...

If I press "Open profile manager/ normal mode I get the attached image I assume that I have to enter manually the TWO profiles that I have in the Thunderbird folder, but before I do, can you confirm how it should be done? Thank you

PS - Meanwhile I ecided to go ahead and enter the two profiles in the Pofile manager (see econd attachement), but when i prss "Launcj another profile" nothing happens and there is not the expected list of profiles... I', afraid of changing it via the "Profile Manager" box...

OK, let me see what I think I should do:

Go into the Profile Manager box where I now have the two profiles and press "OLD". Restart and I should get all the messages that I had in the other computer. Then, go back to Profile Manager box and press "Default User". That should bring me back to where I was originally with all the cirrent messages.

Is that it?

default will certainly being you back to "now" even if what you have created does not work. So go for it.

Thank you Matt

Well. it did not quite work, but I had backed up the Thunderbird folder and by pasting it back I was back in business.
