I switched because plugins stopped working but it seems that ESR does not keep up with the regular release and I would like to switch back.

Did you remove the ESR version first? ESR and regular Firefox are stored in different folders.

Hello davidmartin,

You can download the regular release version (in your preferred language) from here :

www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/

I did that, selecting the regular version but it updated the ESR version instead. Is there a way to tell it not to use ESR?

Would you try this please :

Type in the address bar about:config and press Enter (promise to be careful, if asked)

Type in the search bar and look for the preference :

app.update.channel

Make sure its value is set to release

If you had to change the value, then close and restart Firefox.

Does that work  ?

Thanks for your help. I was confused because when following these directions the prompts all showed that Firefox was being updated and at the end the ESR version was opened. But the new, regular version was there, just in a different folder.

Note that changing app.update.channel via about:config won't have any effect. This pref is set via channel-prefs.js in the defaults\pref folder in the Firefox installation folder. This folder isn't touched by updating Firefox and the update channel can only be changed via installing a full version.

Note that the next major ESR release will be Firefox 68

removed.
