My ISP says server settings are: Outgoing server: smtp.kingston.net Port: 587 Email authentication ON SSL OFF I have been using Thunderbird as long as it has existed. This problem just started happening a couple of weeks ago. Sometimes the mail goes through and sometimes it doesn't. I am an IT consultant and several of my clients who use Thunderbird have reported the same issue. My ISP swears that there is no problem with their SMTP server. I can connect to it immediately but it seems that sometimes the negotiation process takes too long and it times out. I can use other email programs with the same settings with no problem. Any suggestions? Thanks, Garry

Start the computer in Windows safe mode and see if you still get timeouts. If you don't, it indicates a startup program, such as antivirus, is causing the timeout, and that program should not be set to scan outgoing mail.

Safe Mode didn't seem to help but despite swearing that there was nothing wrong with their SMTP server, my ISP has apparently fixed the problem!

Are you saying saying all your communication with your email provider's server must be in the clear? If so, I'd look for a new email provider.
