have tried to login on my desktop today to send a mail, however repeatedly get the above message, which makes no sense at all, as i can access e mail via Gmail sign in or by my Ipad, interestingly my husband who uses the same device has no problems.

Secondly since the latest update the spell check box after pressing send no longer has a send option button, is this an error ?

You are obviously using an imap mail account, but are you accessing using Authentication Method: 'OAuth2' or 'Normal Password'?

If 'Normal Password' then it is highly possible gmail are deliberately blocking you. https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/6010255?hl=en Logon to webmail account and make sure you have selected to use the 'less secure apps' option. Do not be too concerned about gmails choice of words. If you have a decent password then it is just as secure.

There is another alternative available to those who use imap. Access your Account Settings for that mail account and set the Authentication Method to 'OAuth2' and restart Thunderbird. At prompt, Gmail will ask you logon via browser to prove you are you and then an OAuth2 token will be created, stored in the same location as your saved passwords and it will be used for subsequent logons to server.
