I just now marked lots of emails for deletion. They are still showing as deleted. How do I get rid of them permanently or get them into trash in order to delete them.

If your account uses IMAP then there are three options on how delete should be implemented.

Right-click the account, select Settings then select the Server Settings tab. I see three options:

  • move to the nominated folder
  • delete immediately
  • mark for later deletion

I suggest you review those and decide which best suits your needs. I use the "move to folder" option.

You haven't told us enough to allow us to tell which one you're currently using. My guess is the last one, which marks messages for pending deletion by adding a strike-through, like this.
