Totally agree. This issue has been reported as a bug. I reported it 5 years ago, but earlier bug report is 7 years ago. I guess it has never been elevated to a bug of some importance, in the grand scheme of things, which I understand.

Back in the day when I used version TB 9.0.1 it was not a bug. Until I used version 24.1.1 when it stopped and has never been correct since. I'm currently on version 52.9.1

What version are you using ?

If using 52.9.1 or earlier then you could try this addon: https://addons.thunderbird.net/en-us/thunderbird/addon/srsbdnr/?
