How do I get Thunderbird to display images embedded in text?
Images that are part of a message do not display. Instead I get a place holder.

Usually, if you see that broken image sign it means the image contains remote content.
By default for your privacy, Thunderbird blocks all remote content.
Usually, you would get a message just above the email contents telling you the email contains remote content. However, if that message had been auto moved to the Junk folder then you would not see that message until you marked it as not junk and moved it back to the Inbox.
