V60.0 hangs on first startup

Ever since the latest version (60.0) of Thunderbird installed itself it has been acting strangely on startup. TB is in the Windows startup folder so that it automatically starts when the PC is booted. I have 2 screens and TB always used to start, full screen, in the RH one. Now it starts full screen in the LH one, but is completely unresponsive to the mouse. All I can do is to shut it down again and restart. Whereupon it reappears but is now responsive. It still comes up in the "wrong" screen, and if switched out of full screen mode in order to drag it where I want it shrinks to a screen about 6cm square which has to be dragged bigger before you can reliably move it around. Looking at the Troubleshooting Information there is nothing to explain what's going on that I can see. The previous version never exhibited this behaviour and nothing else has changed. OS is Windows 10 with all the latest patches.

Please test that it starts fine on first start with TB NOT in the startup folder.

What are your results?

Hi Wayne, Yes I've removed TB from the Startup folder, it then starts OK if you do it manually from the desktop icon once the PC has booted . Surely this is little different from shutting down the defective version from Startup and re-starting it again from the desktop icon? Oddly, when it automatically started today, there was some functionality. I could look in the various tabs and accounts, but none of the toolbar (File, Edit, View etc) worked, and the minimise / partial screen / full screen controls still gave odd results. It has to be some interplay between the latest versions of TB and Windows 10 as it's been working for years both under W7 and W10 without any problem.

(side issue) > Ever since the latest version (60.0) of Thunderbird installed itself

You should not be on version 60 unless you downloaded from webpage or on the beta channel.

Assuming you are NOT on the beta channel, did it really update on its own and if so, when??

No, not from a thunderbird perspective.

We don't recommend starting Thunderbird in windows boot process. So you are kinda on your own if you continue that practice. Yes, there could be interplay, which sometimes (not always) is a result of antivirus or firewall software.

I hope you reply to the question above about your update situation :)

Hi Wayne, Attached is a screen shot of the current About pop-up. As you can see it says I'm on the release update channel. It installed itself automatically on July 31st at 20:44 UK time. See the attached explorer screen shot which also shows the exact version.

Thanks for that info. It will be helpful if you can also get the values for app.update.url.xxx ...

1. do options > advanced > general (screen shot of what you should see - https://imgur.com/a/X6ZbDn5 ) 2. pick about:config 3. paste the following into "Search" field of about:config app.update.url 4. you will see line items for app.update.url and app.update.url.details - we need the values for those items 5. right click on each and pick "copy value"

Please post your results. Thanks

Hi Wayne, OK, I'll start it manually from now on, but it's strange that it worked OK foe several years. I've had several anti-virus products over the years, but have been running with Kaspersky for about the last year
