How Do I Make TB Delete Junk Mail Automatically
I have TB set to put known junk mail into the junk mail folder automatically. But I still have to delete them myself. When I used Windows Live Mail, it had an option to have known junk mail automatically deleted before I ever saw it. I can't find that option in TB.
Chosen solution
I think your stipulation that it should be automatic has stymied any helpful response.
If you hold down shift while deleting, it will delete immediately, without going to Trash. So in Junk, you could use ctrl+a to select all, then shift+delete to nuke it.
The Junk folder has an "Empty Junk" option on its right-click context menu. This seems to have the desired effect here, though I couldn't guarantee that it deletes immediately without going to Trash.
Thunderbird's designers were aware that no Junk detection system is 100% foolproof, so didn't think an automatic delete would be useful or acceptable to most users.
You could also set the Junk filtering to move Junk messages into Trash directly without going to Junk. Then you have only one (Trash) folder to empty. Unless, that is, you're one of those odd folk who treat the Trash as a filing system.
Both Toad-Hall and myself have expressed a need to vet what is placed in Junk before deletion.

So you NEVER get good messages in the Junk folder?
Correct. If the email client thinks it's junk, I don't see it. Gone.
I would recommend that you allow yourself the opportunity of scanning through Junk. I would say that 99% of the time junk is Junk, but I have had the odd email go to Junk and it wasn't junk.
If you choose to trust junk mail headers by eg: SpamAssassin or other similar then these can get put in Junk.
Unfortunately, good emails can get wrongly categorised. I receive emails from an Artist website which can include various links. These good emails were wrongly categorised as junk, but I scan though emails every couple of days before emptying, so fortunately i could rescue it.
I still manually Empty Junk as it also reminds me to compact the folder when I see the right click menu options.
IF you are auto emptying, please remember to compact that Junk folder to remove all hidden 'marked as deleted' junk emails.
You can set up Junk to automatically empty after xx days.
- Right click on mail account in folder pane and select 'Settings'
- select 'Junk Settings' for the mail account
bottom right...
- select the checkbox for 'Automatically delete junk older than X days'
- click on 'OK'
I guess the bottom line is; TB does not offer that option. Too bad.

Thanks Zenos. That will be a good enough work-around. I was spoiled with Win Live Mail's option to have email sent to the junk folder to be deleted immediately. I kinda miss it.
I don't do much correspondence via email, but I get TONS of junk mail; mostly political. I'm not worried about a very rare piece of email getting lost that way.
