Hitherto, no problem opening this website. Now I cannot although Google Chrome and Internet Explorer can! Reason given by Firefox is that the website is insecure and special permissions have not been given. I just need a simple way to open this website, Firefox instructions are too complex for me to understand what I have to do to to access this website. I'm having no problems accessing other websites on Firefox.

Chosen solution

Is your issue still valid? Did you email the website?

Long story short: as opposed to others not experiencing the issue, I got a blank page on almost any latest Firefox Nightly version (57 - 62), but not on 56 release - on Windows 7 to be precise. Fiddling with some preferences provided better results in these Nightlies but I will save you from that - the important thing is that as of today, it does display for me in most of them by default, so something may have changed at the website that fixed it.

If it still happens for you (btw, does it happen in 60 too?), can you install uBlock Origin and post back your results? Doing so may not seem to be related, but it helped for me in versions when the issue still occurred before today. Preferences changed by that add-on are mostly network-related and make no sense to me being the culprit, but nevertheless, and your feedback may help pinpointing the real reason.

So in short: does it still occur in 59? And after upgrading to 60? And after installing uBlock Origin? Please do not change any of its default settings after doing so, but test right after as well as after restarting Firefox.

Hello,

Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

Let me know if this helps you. What extensions do you have installed?

I was able to open the website no problems, when was the last time, you were able to access it?

How strange! I think it was yesterday I accessed this site with no problem but I think it was also yesterday that Firefox updated itself. This might have nothing to do with the problem of course BUT??????

I tried the link, and got a warning from WebOfTrust; https://www.mywot.com/scorecard/openbve.wixsite.com?utm_source=addon&utm_content=warning-security

Reason given by Firefox is that the website is insecure and special permissions have not been given

What was the exact error message?

Note that the picture you posted is not a warning, it is a status of the website. 'Permissions' is what you have allowed the site to do on Firefox.

As you get no error message, just a blank page, maybe you could try disabling graphics hardware acceleration in Firefox. Since this feature was added to Firefox it has gradually improved but there are still a few glitches.

You will need to restart Firefox for this to take effect so save all work first (e.g., mail you are composing, online documents you're editing, etc.,) and then perform these steps:

In Firefox 55 and above:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and select Options (Windows) or Preferences (Mac, Linux).
  2. Select the General panel.
  3. Under Performance, uncheck Use recommended performance settings. Additional settings will be displayed.
    Fx55Performance-disableHWA
  4. Uncheck Use hardware acceleration when available.
  5. Close Firefox completely and then restart Firefox to see if the problem persists.

Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!

If the problem is resolved, you should check for updates for your graphics driver by following the steps mentioned in these Knowledge base articles:

Have tried this before but to no avail. What I don't understand is why other browsers (Chrome, IE) can open this site but Firefox has suddenly decided it won't!!! Strange that others can open this site on Firefox but I cannot.

Thanks for trying to help.

Not really an error message but here is a screenshot of what information I am given. Do bear in mind that I have never had problems with Firefox opening this site until yesterday.

No joy with any of this I'm afraid. I notice that Chrome and IE both have the same warning with this site as Firefox but the website still opens in these browsers. What next?

Thanks for all your help but how can I get Firefox to let me view the website. Should I use an earlier version of Firefox?

Should I use an earlier version of Firefox?

No, please don't do that - if it's only this one website, and you won't get it to display the way it should, then use another browser for this site. (And use Firefox for every other site/page, of course).

But let's not give up just yet :

You can try these steps in case of issues with web pages : Reload the page : Hold down the Shift key and left-click the Reload button or press 'Ctrl + F5' or press 'Ctrl + Shift + R'

Another thing to try : Clear the cache and cookies only from websites that cause problems.

Clear the Cache:

3-bar menu => Options => Privacy & Security => Cached Web Content :
"Clear Now"

Remove Cookies from sites causing problems:

3-bar menu => Options => Privacy & Security => under 'History' : choose 'Use custom settings for history' => "Show Cookies"

What I wanted to ask :

How do you feel about what the WebOfTrust has to say about this site  ?

See FredMcD's post .....

Tried all you suggested but to no avail. Yes, saw FredMcD's post and I was a little surprised. I have used this site countless times with absolutely no problem. In the future, I will use alternative browsers for this site and use Firefox for all others. However, I would love to know why I'm having problems with this website, especially when other contributors have stated that they have no problem accessing this site.

I'm stumped as well - especially since you have tried just about everything in the book.

I am one of those contributors who have no problem accessing that site (provided a screenshot to prove it .... )

The only thing I can think of now : send them an email and explain the situation (you could even give them a link to this thread .... ) :

Thanks for your contribution to this problem which remains unsolved for me! When I have the time, I will probably e=mail the website.
