If you can get it to work you may be able to use a bookmarklet or console method to change your avatar into something else. I have a bookmarklet that makes it so I can start out as the Boss and have the best sword. Used to get some players get confused or trying to attack me when people used to play this more in first months.

As you can see at https://github.com/mozilla/BrowserQuest/blob/master/shared/js/gametypes.js there are a number of things you can play with for fun.

It doesn’t work for me either when using a proxied connection, but it does when using a direct one. Fwiw, that’s a real proxy, not just proxy software.

Is your connection set up for using a proxy set manually, a PAC file, or for using the system proxy settings, and if so, are you able to choose No proxy and what happens if you choose that? See Connection settings in Firefox for more info.

I’m not able to tell what the connection requirements are and hence why a proxy is failing, but it turns out to be a known issue. In case you use a real proxy too, my guess is your ISP blocked gaming capabilities over the proxy. If you use some proxy software, you may be able to work around it by adapting its configuration settings.
