I clicked "archive" and the panel disappeared.

Chosen solution

Left hand panel = Folder Pane? Go to Layout and turn the Folder Pane back on. If it is already clicked on move your mouse to the left side of the screen and watch for it to change to a double headed arrow. Left click, hold and drag to the right to uncover the Folder Pane.

Makes no sense here ... no sign of double headed arrow. Have been trying to restore left hand panel for some time now.

The Thunderbird window has to be maximized for this to work.

Thx for the advice ... maximised T/bird window but there is no l.h. panel when I open a new page (Write). It is there on the regular window but I want it back on the Write page.

@ Airmail - no offense intended with 'nonsense' ... I ought to have written that the instruction "makes no sense to me as the double arrow does not show.

Never mind ... I'll plod on without it but frankly it's a nuisance not to have the Address Bk available.
