I am trying to link my outlook account to Thunderbird. I linked my mail.com account - it could not have been easier. Then when I tried to add my Outlook account everything goes fine until Thunderbird checks my password then I get a failure message: "Configuration could not be verified - is the username or password wrong?" I even reset my password on Outlook twice and the same thing happens every time I try.

Is this the openly available outlook.com, or some other server?

An MS Exchange server uses its own proprietary email protocol, and to make use of this you need to have the Outlook mail client.

Outlook and Office 365 can use regular SMTP/POP/IMAP protocols, but these have to be specifically enabled on the server.

So, if you're using the open outlook.com formerly known as hotmail, live mail etc it ought to have IMAP and SMTP access already enabled.

If it's run by your employee or some organisation such as a school or even some online email businesses, it may not be configured for the regular protocols.

There are add-ons that allow Thunderbird to work with MS Exchange. Look for DavMail, Exquilla or EWS.
