Hi Christ1

Here is what I did Tools at the top of Thunderbird Options in the drop down Went to Display Clicked on the Display Tab Went to advance button to the right of the line Default font and size CLICK ON ADVANCE Down to text encoding OUTGOING UNICODE UTF -8 INCOMING UNICODE UTF -8

In the dialog you described above: At the top there's a drop-down menu 'Fonts for:'. What's selected? Most likely you'd pick 'Latin'.

There are also 3 check boxes in that dialog. What's their status?

Do you regularly receive messages in another language?

If the problem is seen only in one single message from your uncle, the problem may already be present in that particular message.

Hi christ1

Calibri when I open tools

Fonts & Encoding is Latin Font Control check marks in allow messages to use other fonts and Use fixed width Font for plain text messages UNCHECKED is When possible use the default text coding in replies

No I don't regularly receive messages in another language - symbols are frequent though in this version. I have always kept the same settings for years in Thunderbird so not sure what is going on :)

Ok it could be in the original message 'from your uncle' that was just an example I sent you as the newest message with symbols

Thanks for working on this with me.... I usually don't ask for help and try to sort it out myself....but this just started happening in this version 52.6

Maybe I will uninstall it and reinstall and see what happens !

That looks good then.

You'd be wasting your time. Thunderbird Profile files are stored separately from the Thunderbird program files. The program files are static and do not change (except when you upgrade the Thunderbird application version). Because we store profile and program files separately, you can uninstall Thunderbird without losing your messages and settings, and if something goes wrong with a Thunderbird update your information will still be available. It also means that you don't have to reinstall Thunderbird in order to delete your information or troubleshoot a problem.

Is there any pattern you can see which messages show the problem and which don't, e.g. the problem is seen only from specific senders?

You can try to inspect the source of a message showing the problem. Press Ctrl-U in an open message window to see the source, and look for 'charset' (e.g. Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"). What is the character encoding of that message?

Also in an open message window: View (Alt-V) - Text Encoding What's selected? It should be 'Unicode'.

If there's still a problem: Right-click Inbox in the folder pane - Properties - General Information tab Make sure 'Apply encoding to all messages in the folder ...' is not checked.

Ctrl U is charset="utf-8"

Alt-V was set to Western - I have changed it now to Unicode

Doing the right click on inbox Apply encoding to all messages in the folder is not checked

Thanks for your help... hopefully this was the problem :)

I tried everything listed here. I tried Unicode, Western, Western Windows. Nothing works. Still getting . all over my messages. It doesn't show up when I type them. I only see it when people respond or when I cc myself.
