When I reply to an email, the text cursor is positioned below the original email. I would like it above the original email text. I read that I can change this option in 'composition & addressing' However, when I try to open this option, i get a pop-up box that states 'An email account with this name already exists. Please enter a different account name' Does anybody have suggestions to resolve this? Thx., Rgds.

Chosen solution

Do you know which accounts might give rise to this error message? I'd look for two with the same name, and they are probably both on the same server.

You can change the name.

  1. Go to Tools|Options|Advanced|General.
  2. Click on Config Editor.
  3. There will probably be a warning. Acknowledge this.
  4. When the config editor appears, type server*.name into the search box at the top.
  5. Look down the list. Ignore those that mention "namespace". Look for any that share the same name. Double click any name that is duplicated to edit it. You could just add a number, the important point being to make sure that each entry has a unique name.
  6. If you have a choice, and can tell which is which, edit the name of the account(s) you use less often. Changing account names may have undesirable side effects such as disabling filters, so it's best to try not to affect your most often used account.

I generally name my accounts for their email addresses, since an email address is unique. If I happen to have two instances of the same account, I'd add something like "IMAP" and "POP" to tell them apart.

Now you can close out. I'd restart Thunderbird to make sure it uses the new settings.

Now you should be able to open Account Settings and look at the Composition & Addressing panel.
