I updated Firefox and now NOTHING WORKS. How do I fix this without getting a PHD in internet tech?

Firefox 58. I uploaded it to my MacPro, and now NO SITES CAN BE LOADED. I really don't want to wade thru all kinds of technical stuff to solve this GLOBAL PROBLEM, which presented itself right off the bat. I'd still like to use Firefox, but until Mozilla fixes this KILLER ISSUE, I will be using Chrome or Safari or something else. I hate Google (and Apple too), so this is not an ideal situation, but this Firefox SCREW UP is the end of the line for me unless Firefox is FIXED.

To be clear, I DO NOT want to read a whole bunch of articles on how I can get THEIR BROWSER to work again. JUST MAKE IT WORK and let me d/l and install it.

"Troubleshooting" is NOT what anyone who is not a DEVELOPER wants to do, immediately after installing an update to an existing piece of software. That is THE DEVELOPER'S JOB, not the user's job. EVERY SITE, beginning with Google, Facebook, my Financial Institutions, and all the way down the line are supposedly "set up wrong" according to this latest Firefox. This is a deplorable thing to say about ALL the sites that Firefox has loaded just fine since the beginning until NOW.

Honestly, unless this is some kind of joke, or unless there is a SIMPLE fix to this global problem, I will sadly be saying "good-bye" to Firefox.  :-( This makes me feel SAD, as I have been a loyal user since the OLD days.

Even the window I am using to write this message has "Troubleshooting Information:" with a button that says, "Automatically Add." Please explain to me WHAT THIS EVEN MEANS. -- This is only one example of how WRONG Mozilla got this latest update. After this, it starts in on the "inner workings" of the browser YOU PEOPLE just released, which FAILS TO WORK. To be honest, this does not inspire confidence in Mozilla.  :-(

If you have a simple solution to this, please send it to me or outline it in simple terms. Otherwise, I'm a Chrome or other browser user from now on.

I really do wish Mozilla the best. I hope they can fix this horrendous mess-up right away.

Sincerely, -- M.

Hi MichaelStrickland, does the web content area just stay blank, on all pages?

Upon second reading, this information was not relevant to your description. Never mind.

Some problems occur when your Internet security program was set to trust the previous version of Firefox, but no longer recognizes your updated version as trusted. Now how to fix the problem: To allow Firefox to connect to the Internet again;

  • Make sure your Internet security software is up-to-date (i.e. you are running the latest version).
  • Remove Firefox from your program's list of trusted or recognized programs. For detailed instructions, see

Configure firewalls so that Firefox can access the Internet. {web link}

Deleting my anti-virus program did the trick! Now, how to I get all my Bookmarks back? They are simply MISSING from where they were before.

Hi MichaelStrickland, are they still present in Firefox if you check the Library window?

  • Bookmarks menu > Show All Bookmarks

Each of the 3 "containers" is listed in the left column: Bookmarks Menu, Bookmarks Toolbar, Other Bookmarks

If the bookmarks are missing:

Try a Restore. See: Restore bookmarks from backup or move them to another computer.

If you do not see backups there, did your Firefox perform a Refresh, creating an Old Firefox Data folder on the desktop? If you see that, double-click into it, then into the profile folder with a partially random name (e.g., a1b3c3d4.default), and into the bookmarkbackups folder. You can point the Restore function here using the "Choose File" item on the menu.

If the bookmarks are there:

You may need to re-display the Bookmarks Toolbar and/or add the Bookmarks Menu toolbar button.

Toolbar

You can use any of these methods to show the toolbar list and select the desired bars there:

  • right-click (on Mac Ctrl+click) a blank spot on the tab bar (or the "+" button)
  • (menu bar) View > Toolbars
On Windows, tap the Alt key to activate the menu bar temporarily.
  • in Customize mode > Show/Hide Toolbars (see: Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars)

To turn on the Bookmarks Toolbar, click it on the list.

Bookmarks Menu toolbar button

The optional new bookmarks menu button () should work the same way as the old bookmarks menu button (), which was the "right-half" of the inseparable star+book duo.

To add that button, either:

(A) Use the Customize panel (Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars) to drag the icon to the desired spot on the toolbar

(B) Use the method from Bookmarks in Firefox - section entitled: How do I add the Bookmarks Menu button to the toolbar?

  • Click the "Library" button:
  • Click "Bookmarks"
  • Click "Bookmarking Tools"
  • Click "Add Bookmarks Menu to Toolbar"

User-friendly, the new Firefox IS NOT.
