First you will excuse my English Language witch can be poor for instants... Sorry, but I'am French. Thanks. I use Firefox from numerous years on Mac OSX. In this version (57 Quantum), I didn't find the "sessionrestore" in the Menu (3 bars lying) as in the windows Menu. You will ask me: Why do you look for that ? Because yesterday I crash my opérating system. You will know that in the preferences of Firefox, I alway use "View the latest tabs and windows used". Before the crash, I was having 4 windows open with so much tabs opened in each one. After the crash, when I restart Firefox, it was just one window that open on my desktop. I immediately try to find the "sessionrestore" but I never find it nowhere. Can you help me if you know how force the restoration of the session. Thanks for your answer. Best regards Pierre

Chosen solution

Hi Pierre, if the menu item is missing, it's possible that the session was already restored. Could you check:

(1) History menu, "Recently Closed Windows" and "Recently Closd Tabs"

(2) Back up your session history files as follows:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Return

In the first table on the page, in the Profile Folder row, click the "Show in Finder" button.

If Finder displays just a folder icon, double-click into the folder to see the full file and folder list.

In your profile folder, double-click into the sessionstore-backups folder. Save a copy of the files here to a safe location that Firefox won't overwrite.

(3) Inspect your session history files

The kinds of files you may find among your sessionstore files are:

  • recovery.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your currently live Firefox session (or, if Firefox crashed at the last shutdown and is still closed, your last session)
  • recovery.baklz4: a backup copy of recovery.js
  • previous.jsonlz4: the windows and tabs in your last Firefox session
  • upgrade.jsonlz4-build_id: the windows and tabs in the Firefox session that was live at the time of your last update

To preview the contents of a file, you can drag and drop it onto this page, then click Scrounge URLs: https://www.jeffersonscher.com/res/scrounger.html

That tool is on my site, so please let me know if it doesn't work for you.

Do any of them have the tabs you need?

Dear jscher2000, Your solution works very well since I could find all my tabs and open the windows before. It will take time to put everything back in place, but it is a big step forward. Again, thank you very much
