urgg... the new Firefox has gone for a windows ten, militaristic look... and I really detest that kinda look. I mean, if I wanted a touch screen look, i would have bought an android but now I'm stuck with a bunch of windows that are harder to tell where the start and end, and where to drag and drop them (if i still want support when my windows 7 professional support runs out (2020 FTW!)).

Enough about my dislikes of windows ten, I know there were complete themes for Firefox 56, but apparently they are now discontinued as they wanted to avoid incompatibility issues every 6 weeks. that being said, the links were rather bad at fully describing, and so all i know is that they have clamped down on the source code and made add-on unable to use some of it. Does that mean that you can't do anything to fix the new hard edged Firefox theme? there were talks about roll-backs looks not available too... I never got to see it anyways but if its an option then i would very much like to know about it!

I'm really disappointed at the new Firefox, but at leased they didn't get rid of the search bar like quantum...

If you haven't tried custom CSS for reverting back to the old UI, I suggest taking a look at https://github.com/Aris-t2/CustomCSSforFx/issues/2. That is made by the developer of Classic Theme Restorer.

The search bar is disabled by default in Firefox Quantum but can re-added from the Customization palette (hamburger menu --> Customize).

What about 56's appearance did you want to mimic in 57?

i really just want a more windows 7 friendly look to it. Much like how non-minimalist looking windows look out of place on windows 10, the new Firefox looks horrid on my window 7 desktop (i know how to replace the thumbnail though)

Also, i forgot to ask it up there but is there any way to revert, or at least increase the size, of the new tab regular pages when you open a new tab? all the new extras are completely useless for me

Like most posting here, I HATE this version of Firefox, 57.0. I did a System Restore on my Windows 7 HP and reverted back to 56.0.2.

I am experiencing some of the same issues as others: appearance, positioning of items on the tool bar, etc. ; and I just don't have time to mess with all of it.

I do not do change well, and I am always prepared to grin and bare changes, but this one bites! Can't see me giving into this change.

I hope Mozilla will consider giving users the option of staying with the older version and keeping it updated. If not, I guess I'll be going back to Internet Explorer.

Thanks for letting me vent!

no worries. I just think it looks really horrible and out of place, like a chrome replacement even... but i honestly think that's the wrong direction to take a browser full of people that don't want Chrome (that is the one everyone else uses (or the few exploders and edge people out there (forgot mac))). hence why I'm after a 'patch' to restore the previous look, cause i doubt that the improvements behind the scenes are non-existent. I debated reverting back, but i think I'll wait to see if they offer a fix to this poor design (in my honest opinion)

also, for my second question...

  1. Open about:config in the address bar, press Enter and "accept the risk".
  2. Type browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount (or just topsitescount) in the Search field.
The value for this preference is 6 by default, gets modified to 12 if you choose Show two rows using the cogwheel in the top right of the New Tab page, but can be modified here to any value you want. It does not have to be a multiple of 6, but setting it to e.g. 18 makes it show 3 rows and 6 columns. For the order: you can do several things with tiles (or thumbnails) for Top Sites, but I’m afraid you cannot change the order in v57 when the new and so-called "Activity Stream" is enabled. However, you can disable that view by toggling the browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.enabled preference to false in about:config, which will set back the New Tab page view back to what you were used to. Adding rows and columns would then be done by modifying browser.newtabpage.columns and browser.newtabpage.rows. Note that when changing any of the latter, you may need to restart Firefox, or you might see empty New Tab pages. Also see the Customize your Firefox New Tab page article.

How about just top sites if you use Tiles Make top sites in tab page more (smaller icons) about:config page named browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount to expand your amount. Is all I got... We know nothing... A article printed today said " The new toolbar can be customised in 265,252,859,191,742,656,903,069,040,640,000 permutations." Think know 6 myself. Info will come, Extensions will be built.... Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

That was for the Tiles Home Page and the smaller top Icons (no idea do not use that stuff myself, gone) but the code for adding more smaller tiles and it may reduce the size of the small one's also to fit more.

Make top sites in tab page more (smaller icons) Copy/paste about:config into the address bar and press enter then is the top of that page copy/paste browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.topSitesCount into the search bar, I think I read you can double the number there from 6 to 12 to expand the amount.

Is not going to break anything if too many will not show.

Looking for article this is not it..https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2017/11/firefoxs-major-quantum-upgrade-now-rolling-out-to-everyone/ Found it : https://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/3021028/firefox-quantum-finally-launches-to-the-world-with-double-speed Does not provide any info on that number though.

Please let us know if this solved your issue or if need further assistance.

thanks for polishing my comment!

To go back to what this thread was about though, is there a way to make a theme that changes the look of firefox to the way it use to look? or is that too much of a complete theme and has lost support with the new update?

Also, in that about section you can revert the new tab to the way it was previously before the update (so wrapped to be able to do that!! it was a cool little extra bookmarks thing that i really liked about firefox) but is there options to say, put the refresh button back into the search bar and/or get rid of the other junk that's been accumulating there (the likes of pocket and reader mode and even bookmarks really don't have any advantage being in the search bar)? i know i can just click it and press enter, but wouldn't it be sooo much better if i could just click :P, better than looking 'out of the box' to find the new icon that's either hiding in the corner or jammed between two boxes.
