If you cannot send nor receive emails after an update, then check your Firewall, which might be part of your anti-virus program. It is possible that it thinks the latest update was a different program and so is blocking it.
Close Thunderbird. Access Firewall and make sure Thunderbird is allowed.
I use Norton and on one occasion in order to get it work, I had to block Thunderbird, ok it, re-access Firewall and then set Thunderbird to allow.
I have also heard of others who had to add Thunderbird back into the list, so they could allow it.
