Thunderbird is horribly slow on my laptop, running Windows 10 and Avast antivirus. Slow to key new messages, slow to load messages, slow to delete messages.
When keying, response is painfully slow, several seconds, and I'm not the fastest typist! \

What is your anti-virus software?
Avast is known to cause problems for Thunderbird. See https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Antivirus_Related_Performance_Issues#AVAST
Also make sure to create an exception in Avast for the Thunderbird profile folder. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
