Why cant I Customize the New Mail Sound, it wont browse or find my sound file, or let me type a path in the "Use the following sound file" box.
I want to customise the New Mail sound. I've done this in the past and it worked fine, but I've recently migrated to a new PC, with Windows 10, and I've have this problem.
I know where the sound file is located so hit browse, but nothing happens. So I thought I'd type a path in the "use file box", but it wont let me type anything ; the cursor is there but nothing happens. I'm using version 52.2.1 (32bit) I've attached a screenshot for what its worth.

Did you happen to migrate from Linux and copy the profile/config?
Nevertheless, please try to see if this question is of help. That issue apparently occurred because of such reason, but also describes a method to specify a sound file using the Config Editor.
Basically: Set mail.biff.play_sound.type to 1 Set mail.biff.play_sound.url to file:///C:/<your_sound_file_including_its_path>

Tonnes, you hit the nail on the head!! I thought I'd copied the profile from my old Vista Windows. But as I wanted the emails sorted etc, I've realised that I used the config from my laptop running Linux Mint 17.2.
I did what you suggested and got into into the heart of things using Config Editor, and all is perfect now.
However, a comment. I don't understand why the TBird Options/General window didn't let me browse for the sound file I wanted. I'm no techie, so following your instructions fixed it, and I'm happy now. :))
Thanks! :)

Good to see it works.
With regard to your comment: it may be obvious that the format of a sound file location (i.e. the path) is different in Linux, so the path is not recognized properly in Windows. Doing some testing, it turns out the Browse button is still enabled, but the file browser does not get opened, at least on Windows. The same thing happens when you enter e.g. "aloha" instead of a valid Linux or Windows path for the value using the Config Editor. Apparently an NS_ERROR_MALFORMED_URI error shows up in the Developer Tools > Error Console in that case, both when opening the Options dialog and when pressing the Browse button.
This may be worth a bug. As the location field does not allow typing in the sound file location manually, the Browse button is simply required and will work for paths/files previously not set and hence be emtpy in the Config Editor, but not when migrating a profile containing a Linux (and possibly Mac) location, forcing the user to use the Config Editor this way.
Tonnes, If you think its worth filing a bug report, I'll let you do that as you've delved into this situation much deeper than I can follow. That said, as a user that can "do stupid and unexpected" things, perhaps the guys looking to keep things simple for the user can see what I've done and anticipate it for the future.
Thanks for getting so hands on with this, I'm sure Firefox will be all the better for it in the future :)
