I've been using TB for a couple years on my Win 10 x64 computer (before on Win 7 & 8). Periodically it would sometimes hang for about 1 minute at times, usually just after sending or queuing a mail to be sent. Restarting wouldn't help tho sometimes rebooting would help for at least a while and sometimes for a long time. Well now it's doing this about all the time, especially when sending a message (right after the popup says "mail sent successfully". Sometimes it will do it when just typing text in an email. And waiting for TB access for that minute each time is making it unusable for me.

I've compacted folders regularly. I have 28GB RAM w an i5 processor and very little else going on and my C drive is an SSD. The inbox, Drafts, Sent, Trash folders are basically empty. I do have many GB of mail in a fairly large tree structure in my Local Folders, where all mail goes. Below is my TB info.

Safe mode sometimes avoids the problem, but mostly not. Sending using my gmail or my server's account has same behavior. Disabling all add-ons doesn't work now, tho in the past sometimes it would). Turning off Kaspersky Internet Security (KIS) 2017 doesn't help. And sometimes the problem will not appear, tho usually once it does, only rebooting may sometimes help. Now I can't get rid of the problem.

Yesterday I tried about 30 experiments (safe, disabling add-ons, stopping KIS, ...) to see what might help, but none would work reliably And I rebooted about 5 times. I'm at wits end with this, and I don't have much more hair to pull out.

Any ideas on what to try?

Ah, finally a breakthrough on this. I followed the thread about Win 10 freezing in Bugzilla and found that stopping Windows Search Service FIXES THE PROBLEM! Specifically see https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1262517#c16

This has been driving me (and several others here!) crazy. I've been battling this issue for months, esp the last two on Win 10. Stopping Windows Search service does the trick. (See e.g. https://www.howtogeek.com/howto/10246/how-to-disable-search-in-windows-7/ if you don't know how to do that.)

But very unclear to me why this does it since supposedly nothing of TBird is being searched: -- I have "Allow Windows Search " in TBird off -- neither my profile folder (or any subfolder) is included in Windows' Search Indexing. -- Ditto for my APPDATA/local/Thunderbird and APPDATA/roaming/Thunderbird -- virtually no other area is included in Windows Search Indexing either

Anyhow if anyone has any clues how to get around this without turning off Windows Search Service, please post here.

Forgot to mention, all other programs (and I have/use lots) are behaving normally.

Thanks Wayne. While running tests, my machine died. Hopefully today it gets fixed and I can resume.

OK, back to it. TB works OK when I start Win 10 in Safe mode. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 2017 (KIS) but not starting it in Safe Mode. Enabling KIS while in Safe mode, and all worked OK too. But in Win non-Safe mode, even killing KIS AND Windows Defender, I still have the problem. I have no other AV or Firewall software running. And running TB in it's Safe Mode doesn't help either, so not an add-on (AFAIK).

Any ideas on how to proceed? I can't go to Kaspersky with this since it's not necessarily KIS that's the problem (looks like it's not). [BTW, I did steps 1 & 2 on the list and all of the rest, including deleting the global sqllite file to be rebuilt. Safe mode in Win 10 is the only thing that avoids this problem.]

Some more info that might help diagnose this: -- tho most times (~95%) sending (either now or delayed) makes it hang, sometimes it doesn't hang then. Disabling SendLater doesn't affect the hanging. -- When sending immediately, it only hangs after I get the sending completed message. When sending delayed (using Send Later), it hangs immediately on queuing it (!) -- the great majority of "hangs" occur when sending. Occasionally, tho seldom, it will hang when composing, and once just when moving a message. -- Tho I don't think this is the problem since hangs don't always happen and Windows safe mode works OK, I do have a LARGE amount of email (26GB from 20 years) but basically all are under Local Folders (25.5GB). Most of that are in archived folders (18GB) that seldom get accessed at all. Other individual folders are all less than 2GB. I compact folders frequently, and after compacting, there's no diff in amount of hanging. -- My address books contain a few 1,000 emails -- I'm using the latest release (52.2.1)

I've been thru all the tests in https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems and Windows Safe Mode is the only thing that resolves the issue. Disabling my AV/Firewall (KIS 2017) doesn't help, nor does re-installing (as directed). No other anti-malware running.

If anyone has any ideas, please respond.

This was my experience on updating from Windows 7 to 10. The changes I had to make may help you or not. https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com.au/2016/08/windows-10-and-thunderbird-firefox.html

Matt, thanks. Actually I'd seen your post and the video before and found that my Link Power management setting was Off to begin with. So I'm still looking for a way around this problem. Thanks anyhow.

If safe mode helps "sometimes", then I would say

You haven't " list account types (imap, pop, rss, etc) obtainable from Help | Troubleshooting "

Wayne, thanks. But safe mode in TB doesn't solve the problem at all; only booting Windows 10 in safe mode does. Even exiting my AV/Firewall when TB in safe mode doesn't fix it.

  • I went thru and tried everything else in https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Testing:Memory_Usage_Problems, and no relief except Windows Safe Mode
  • All my accounts (6 of them) are POP -- I'll pm you the details.
  • My largest folders are now 700MB and only a few of those are "active". I do have ones I only use for archiving manually (i.e. email only gets in them if I move email there), that are larger, but it's only yearly or so I do the archiving.
  • I run LOTS of software (I'm a software engr , but not Windows) for a long time) including video editing, Apache, PHP (Zend Studio), Adobe xxx, MS Ofc, ... and no other program has any such problem. And TB has been showing this problem off and on for about a year; only now has it become basically all the time, except every now and then it doesn't hang on sending.

When it hangs, there's no indication in Process Explorer of any unusual TBird activity, and all other programs respond normally My internet is reasonable here (20Mbs) and usually things are fine.

Today it hung when I just went to Help | Restart TB in Safe Mode and then it quit the restart altogether so I had to redo that.

Is there any way to get a debug log that might help? Should I file a bug report now or ??? Maybe I go into Win Safe mode and try to find services that "cause" the problem -- but that's a LONG process. Any other ideas? TIA

I'm still having this problem after 4 weeks, and would love to get some advice on how to resolve it.

I want to thank Matt for his thorough investigation

at this.

It seems I didn't have to make exceptions to AVG or CCleaner. 52.4 and AVG upgrade, along with an update of Win10 (don't know what that was.) has solved the problem so far.
