Hi   !
I'm not sure what your question is : Do you want an explanation about the settings under   'Tabs'   in   'about:preferences' => General   ? (You can also click on the 3-bar menu => Options => General)

Do you want to know how to open links in the tab you're in   ? Press the Shift key and then click on the link.

To open links in a new tab :   maybe you'd like to try this add-on :

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-us/firefox/addon/tab-mix-plus/

it's in the neigbourhood, Pretty sure there's a choice where to open a link. (a choice that can also be made on the publishers's site) Default for that should be 'new tab'. Which I had but looks like not functioning anymore. I know the right click option. (not my question)

If you want to open a link in a new tab :

Press the 'Ctrl' key and then the link.

(Or use the Tab Mix Plus add-on)

Perhaps you can give an example of what you expect to happen and what actually happens ?

The settings available on Firefox are explained in the article that I linked to:

Taking this support page as an example clicking on links will open the linked page such as your profile RaulV in the current tab.

If on the other hand you right click the link you get options including opening in a New Window, a NewTab or a Private Window.
