Why did messages in inbox disappeared?

Just download message from server and created a folder to move some messages to. All of a sudden my messages disappeared. I have tried to repair folder to no avail.. Is there anything else I can try to get the messages back and to keep it from happening again? BTW the message aren't in any other folder.

did your anti virus chirp up with a message about a virus found?

No virus message. I have found that if I log on to my email through a web browser and then delete messages they were then deleted from Thunderbird. I can not figure out how to download messages to Thunderbird and at the same time "clean" them from my email client server. Because if I delete them from the server they are then deleted from Thunderbird program.

Move them to the Local Folders account in Thunderbird.
