Firefox is steadily downloading data at 50 -150 KBps. Why? How to find out?
Activity monitor shows that the Firefox is responsible for all this data but I can see no reason for it. I do have a lot of tabs up but none of them are doing anything so far as I can tell. Is there a way to tell what's going on?

Thanks, Fred and Cor-el. I got Malwarebytes Anti-malware and ran it -- it found no problems. But when I started Firefox again the problem was gone. Strange since turning it off and restarting it last time still had the problem. So I don't know what was happening or why it's stopped. That was last night, and this morning still no problem. Thanks again.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode {web link} by holding down the <Shift> (Mac=Options) key, and then starting Firefox.
A small dialog should appear. Click Start In Safe Mode (not Refresh). Is the problem still there?
The problem is still there. The data rate seems to have built up slowly to the reported rate. Firefox is still in safe mode right now.
Try the about:networking page to see what active connections it shows.
