when I switch to Private Browsing, I don't see the purple page, nor the mask, so I don't really know if I am in Private Browsing

If you switch your entire Firefox session to private by changing the setting on the Privacy panel of the Options page, Firefox starts up in a "stealth" mode where you have no visible indication of anything unusual. However, as a quick test, you can try this:

  • launch a new window (e.g., Ctrl+n)
  • close the window (e.g., Ctrl+w)
  • check the History menu: if it shows you can restore the closed window, you're in a regular session, not a private window

You should also see only "New Private Window" in the File menu and will notice the "New Window" is missing when you are in permanent Private Browsing mode (Always use Private Browsing mode; Never Remember History).

You can use an extension to get Private Browsing mode support per tab and have a purple mask.

Private Browsing mode tabs get a dashed underline You can toggle Private Browsing mode on/off via the right-click context menu of a tab
