My solution to being unable to input email accounts - not found on support points.

Suddenly had THUNDERBIRD stop accessing emails on all accounts (spinning wheel) on Win10 after latest update of 45.1 or so. Decided to try reinstalling the accounts with no luck (many times). Multiple fresh installs and deleted profiles. Still no luck. A few times I was able to get accounts to even get past clicking add an account, getting to the point of verifying password but "password or username wrong" etc. error message.

Only way I was able to get any accounts set up was when VPN was running. I don't live in any geo-lock-out country or whatever may prevent me to access things. If I turned off my VPN and tried accessing email later on ... I got the spinning wheel. Argh!! Simply wouldn't connect. Even if I turned VPN on again.

SOLUTION FOUND WAS: VPN disconnected and exited. Started Thunderbird, went to Menu --- Options --- Advanced --- Network and Disk Space --- 'configure how Thunderbird connects to Internet clicked "Settings" --- selected "No Proxies". Then OK for each window, tried setting up email accounts in Gmail and others without a problem.

Mine was set to "Use System Proxy Settings" and I don't use Proxies. Only program is VPN. No viruses on computer. Multiple scans with different programs to be sure and disabling AV even going as far as to uninstall it.

I am no tech so i thought I'd share this so maybe it can be added to check in self support when trouble shooting adding email account issues.

I think you do use a proxy. Lots of anti virus programs set themselves up as one. Guarantees that all incoming and outgoing traffic goes through them. Sort of.

Just check See https://us.battle.net/support/en/article/7300083 Got to give it to the gamers, they know how to make things run faster.

Thank you.

Didn't realize that as seen in other connection settings I've seen it as no proxies. Set to auto detect now. Hasn't been working unless had VPN on (error saying couldn't connect to server - for any accounts). Now this morning it went through. Typical of my Windows experiences. Something always goes buggy on it's own. Not giving up on getting this machine to allow LINUX to install (it's a Intel Skylake processor thing).
