How do I send a BCC e-mail to all the contacts in my address book? When I highlight them all and click on write, it does not work.

Sending an e-mail to many people like this will probably fail. E-mail service providers don't like people to do this because spam/junk could be sent this way. Just how many e-mail addresses you can send one e-mail to without a problem will depend on the policy of your e-mail service provider.
Create an e-mail mailing list in the Thunderbird Address book.
Right-click the address book on the left side, and select "New List". Name the list, then start typing in people's names/e-mail addresses, one per line. They will be auto-filled just like when you start typing in the "To" for a new e-mail.
I would add no more than 10 people per list.
When sending the e-mail, type the name of the list in the To, CC or BCC area, and it will send the e-mail to everyone in that list.
Select & copy your e-mail text before sending, then you can paste that text into the next e-mail for the next list.
Or you can save the e-mail as a Template (File: Save As: Template), then start the next e-mail by opening that Template, changing who it is sent to.
What Bruce said, plus…
Thunderbird also has its own internal limit at "approximately 60" addresses.
A Mailing List will certainly overcome this particular limit.
For smaller numbers where a Mailing List might not be called for, I'd also suggest that you NEVER starting from the address book. Start your message and add addressees to it, using the Contacts Sidebar, where you can use the "Add to Bcc" button, or use drag'n'drop, or right-click, and enter them all as Bcc:. You can use the usual shift-click, ctrl-click and keyboard shortcut techniques to select multiple addresses.

If you don't see the Contacts Sidebar in the compose window, tap F9.
