My add-ons are disappearing when I shut down Firefox. I have looked through articles, not helping.
For some reason my add-ons stopped loading automatically. I get a screen that talks about installing each one, one by one. They do not show up in my add-on, extensions screen anymore. They work but are not showing up. Why do I have to keep reloading these add-ons after I shut down Firefox and then bring it back up...? I have gone through the files looking for answers and not really finding a permanent solution. Something about the compatibility.ini file but that really is not permanently fixing this problem. I refreshed my profile. Not sure what to do now. This started out of the blue as far as I know. I have not done anything to create this.
As always, thanks so much for your help in advance. I really love Firefox and do not want to use anything else. Please help..!

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Type about:support in the address bar and press enter.
Under the page logo on the left side, you will see Application Basics. Under this find Profile Folder. To its right press the button Show Folder. This will open your file browser to the current Firefox profile. Now Close Firefox.
Delete all extensions*.* files and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
After, restart Firefox.
See "Corrupt extension files":
- https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
You will have to approve the updating one last time.
I have seen these instructions before. However, I am not clear on what
- .* means. I see a lot of directories and files there.
I see .db .txt .json .sqlite .xml I see the compatability.ini
Which files "exactly" do you want me to remove...???
I have done this before and it did not work but then I was not clear on what *.* means.
Please advise... Thanks for your help.
extensions*.* means any file that starts with extensions

With all due respect to you, your answer explained nothing. I am not a dummy when it comes to computers but I am not IT status for sure. I imagine that you get exasperated with all the dumb things we can do out in the public-at-large.... I once was asked to describe how to make a peanut butter sandwich from getting out a loaf of bread forward to learn how to explain things in a most basic way.
I gave you examples above of what I was seeing. There is nothing that has a *.* at the end which I would not expect to see anyway. What EXACTLY DO YOU WANT ME TO DELETE besides the compatibility.ini which is pretty much the peanut butter sandwich.
I have gone through steps to fix this problem myself. If I did not need help, I would not be asking. That being said, with all due respect to you, I really need more information.
Any file that starts with an extension would look like what EXACTLY..!!!
This is what I mean;
You are asking me to delete all folders and compatibility.ini....?
Fred:
Okay, so I am a dummy... When I read your last email, I did not go to help:support and profiles to look at the folders. I did not realize there was a folder called "extensions." Extensions meant something after the . like .doc. This is not an excuse but I was in the middle of a big project. Today I looked. And, lo and behold there is a folder called "extensions."
In the meantime, and for an unknown reason, the problem has stopped. I know there was an Firefox update. Not sure if that had anything to do with it.
Thank you for your help. I do appreciate all that you do. I feel bad for being one of those "dummies" out there that make people pull their hair out, curse, and rant to be others about the stupidity of people....!
Next time I need help, I will try to do better - I promise.
