How do I get Thunderbird to automatically add a suffix number for documents saved that have existing files the same name but need to be saved? THX

I get attachments with the same name, but content is different. These are sent using the same name each time, but different when I open to view. Saving them requires me, using Thunderbird, to add a number with a dash, such as filename-1.txt, in order to save them all and not replace. My yahoo mail does this automatically saving the file and adding the correct number after the filename and before the . extension. Any add ons have this feature? I'm new to Mozilla, but donated $50 because I thought the mail app does a better job than outlook. Thanks! Greg

I have located an addon extension which may help; similar to what is required but a slightly different way of doing it. This addon is used with Message Filters.

I downloaded and installed the addon extension In order to install a downloaded extension, please do the following:

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Add-ons.
  2. Drag your downloaded XPI file to the Add-ons Manager tab and drop it.

or

  1. Click the menu button New Fx Menu and choose Add-ons.
  2. Click the gear icon at the top-right corner to the left of the search box and select Install Add-on From File…
  3. Locate the XPI file you downloaded and click Open.

In Addons Manager tab I can now see the addon listed with buttons eg: Options, Disable , Remove click on 'Options' then I selected the option 'Save attachments to' click on OK This will now show up as an addition option in the Message filter section.

click on 'Restart' Thunderbird prompt.

In 'Message filters' I created a filter which only runs when I manually select it in order to test. All my other filters only run when getting new mail. So will not be triggered when I run manually. But you could set it up to do it auto when getting new mail.

In my case as a test: via 'Menu Bar': 'Tools' > 'Message filters' or via 'Mail Toolbar' : 'Menu icon' > 'Message filters' > 'Message Filters'

  • click on 'New'
  • give filter a suitable name - eg:TestSave
  • Only select 'Manually run'
  • select 'match all of the following'
  • 'Attachment Status' and 'is' and 'has Attachment'

Perform these actions:

  • 'Save attachment to' and choose folder
  • click on OK

Filter is listed at the top.

  • Enable filter by selecting checkbox.

select email in list - I selected an email I had previously sent which had an attachment I knew was in the same folder as the filter -'Save attachment to' and choose folder. Via 'Menu Bar': 'Tools' > 'Run filters on Message' or via 'Mail Toolbar': 'Menu icon' > 'Message filters' > 'Run filters on Message'

A copy of the same image was put into the desired folder and it did not overwrite the original - it added a number eg: filename-1.jpg

Using this method could help. You could get it to do it automatically on download if desired, but may need to modify the filter and possibly add other conditions such as perhaps the FROM is always a particular person or the Subject is always a specific subject and does not change.

In which case you could modify exisitng test one: select filter name click on 'Edit' OR just create new filter:

  • click on 'New

give filter a suitable name

  • only select 'Getting new mail'
  • select 'match all of the following'
  • 'FROM' and 'contains' and email address
  • click on small + to add another condition
  • 'Attachment Status' and 'is' and 'has Attachment'

Perform these actions:

  • 'Save attachment to' and choose folder
  • click on OK

then when new mail arrives from that person with an attachment, it will get auto saved to specified folder with additional number to filename.

Thank you so much for helping. I'm new to MAC and I wanted something NOT DOS, NOT Microsoft! I've been a big fan of opensource and when I saw there was a good email program, again not Outlook, I jumped on it. Consider me a guinea pig if you need help with tech questions. I'm 35 year IT/Computers and Electronics enigneer. Just not MAC savvy. I donated so hope it helps.
