I have found the solution. I had the add-on - Theme Font & Size Changer. I ran the update for all Add-ons. Seems the button for the toolbar for the Add-on Failed. But since I ran it - my view of e-mail has returned to normal - no small unreadable font. Just in case anybody else finds a similar problem. In future I will double-check to make sure the updates run.....
