How do I uninstall an incompatible add-on to TB without being able to open TB?

I downloaded an app called SyncMate to synchronize my Google contacts with my Mac contacts. I didn't realize this was putting an add-on called Google Contacts 0.7.12 into Thunderbird. Now I find that this add-on is incompatible with TB and causes it to crash every time I try to open it. I want to get rid of it but don't know how to do this without being able to open TB. I have already deleted the SyncMate application. Please help. Thank you.

Start Thunderbird in safe mode. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode-thunderbird

Holding down the option key to start TB in safe mode doesn't work. TB still crashes.
