Unable to find browser.newtab.url in about:config to set google.com as default
On "https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1013039", I was unable to find "browser.newtab.url" so I could set it to google.com
Using version 48.0.2. Should be easier to set up what you want to show up for NEW TAB.
Under "new tab controls" should be another option like "set your new tab page"...
Chosen solution
This setting in the Firefox configuration has since been removed by the developers. Third party programs and add-ons tended to exploit this setting in the configuration, so about:newtab
is the new tab page that will be used by default.
However, you can change your new tab page by installing the New Tab Override add-on. You will then be able to adjust the new tab page URL through the add-on settings, rather than diving into the Firefox configuration page.

In Firefox 41 the browser.newtab.url pref was removed. That pref was being abused by malware so frequently that Mozilla decided to remove that pref to eliminate that type of hijack. You will need an extension such as this to restore it. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-override/
Or for having your homepage as the new tab page, try this extension. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/new-tab-homepage/
If you are using Classic Theme Restorer, go into CTR options > Tabs (1) section and set your preference for the new tab URL there.
For Super Start you can use the about:superstart page.
