Why has Thunderbird stopped adding attachments when I compose an email?

I can send an attachmant from , say, Photo Gallery, but if I try to add it having composed an email, although the dropdown boxes appear and I can select the file to attach, nothing happens.

that is usually an anti virus program blocking the attachment process. What do you use?

I use ~Avast Free AV. But now the problem appears to be sporadic. It happened a couple of times yesterday, but then corrected itself and is now working OK today!
