Some of my bookmark favicons disappeared and were replaced by ones that show a blank page. I read numerous articles about the problem, but nothing has helped.

I have read so many articles on this problem, and have found no solution yet. Only some of my favicons, which were previouly good, have disappered. They were repalced by 'blank page' images where the favocons should be on my Firefox favorites toolbar. Here is a short list of them: the BBC, The Washington Post, HebCal date converter, CapitalOne, FedLoan, US Bank, The Veterans Administartion, and Google. I don't recognize a pattern in the types of websites and ALL these favicons appear in Internet Explorer and Google Chrome...very strange. This happened more than six month ago. I have read more online articles, and tried more things than I can expalin here. I picked up a few nasty viruses along the way chasing help that hurt and caused enough grief that i really didn't need. So, I am asking y'all at Firefox to help, PLEASE. Thank You.

Chosen solution

You can check these prefs on the about:config page to make sure they are still default.

  • browser.chrome.favicons
  • browser.chrome.site_icons

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Hello,

I am sorry about this. The favicons are saved in your cached files. So do you clear your browsing history alot and select the box "Cached images and files"?

No sir, I do not delete cahed images and files. It does not explain why the favicons fail to show up in the URL anymore....I forgot to include that bit of info in my post...sorry. I am NOT an IT person and this is kinda frustrating...lol...trying to keep my sense of humor intact. Thank you.

With the mention of both Google and IE, you aren't using Xmarks, are you?

And how about Firefox Sync?

BTW, the favicons are not stored in any type of "cache", they are saved right with the corresponding bookmark - in the places, sqlite file. And they're not stored in a common image format, but rather base64 alpha/numeric string format which is arcane.

Overall, we see very, very few problems with "lost" favicons. But they will be gone if a bookmarkbackup file is restored. The JSON file format used for the backups don't contain the favicon data.

I mark all replies as helpful, even if they don't contain a solution, because it does give me something else to investigate. To answer your questions, No I do not use Xmarks, or Firefox Sync. I don't even know what they are.

This is not a matter of anything being restored. I have deleted the icons that appear as blank pages and then tried to regain the actual favicon by draging the URL line down to the bookmarks/favorites line again manually...however the Favicon is missing there as well...very strange!

Yep, strange. Sorry, I don't have any more ideas at this time.

We have enough contributors around here that there's a good chance you'll get more ideas later on.

Thank you. Let's see if I have described something others are also experiencing, and if anyone has figured out how to solve the issue.

Caution: Unfortunately there is no way to update the FavIcon from new releases of FF using e10s.

This is on the Firefox Addon Site for Favicon Reload as you can see the author of that addon is just as frustrated as those of us using Firefox which is becoming more and more defunct the more it moves forward the less that works.
