This happened several times today. It takes over the "focus" so I can't make notes while it is happening. If I shut down FF, it asks if I want to close down all 27 tabs or whatever. Then it restarts. I managed to restart the computer and it starts up again, making more and more tabs. The one thing that may have stopped it is going to the Cache folder and deleting all 10,000+ items there. I am running version 47 and when I checked that in "help" it downloaded an update. Back to running Windows 7 after a brief encounter with Windows 10.

You can check for problems with the sessionstore.js file in the profile folder that stores session data. When sessionstore.js is deleted you lose pinned tabs and Tab Groups and open tabs and you will have to recreate them, so if necessary make a note or bookmark them.

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:
