since upgrade no auto-offline mode & manual doesn't always work
I have Mac OSX ver 10.11.5 Short description: Before (Upgrade?) it worked great. Now, I almost can't use Tbird when I'm offline because something will go wrong.
I kept waiting to see a "What's New in this upgrade" item that says this bug has been fixed so maybe it's just my settings but...
I never used to worry if my internet connection was on or off because Thunderbird always auto-selected offline mode/online mode as needed... like upper left corner of new message would either say "send" or "send later" as appropriate and I never lost a message, never needed to take care to select offline mode before starting a new message (and I never used to get lots of error messages saying "TB can't connect". In fact I never once remember manually setting offline mode.)
Now, even manually selecting it doesn't always work and sometimes I loose a message. Like I'll notice the upper left says "send" but I'm not connected so I'll toss out new message, go select offline mode but it will already be check marked! What seems to work at that point is clicking on it anyway!
Other times I'll go online during a new message but upper left corner will say "send later". When that happens there is NO good solution, I'll probably loose some portion of that message. If you say "hey, what did you expect? I'll reply "True, but It never caused trouble before, somehow TB always knew and auto-switched back and forth.
Maybe this will help: It used to be messages in outbox would automatically be sent when I went online. Now I must quit and restart TB, then they will be auto sent
If this is not an upgrade related problem or my own user error (please suggest any preferences settings corrections)...Only other thing I can think of is: I have installed two add-ons. But both were before problem started (I think!). Add-on's are: Enigmail and AdBlockPlus

What's your motivation for all this toggling between online and offline? That's a rather unusual workflow and likely one that isn't rigorously tested.

Zenos, Thank you for saying "probably not tested". With that knowledge I'll relax and stop trying to fix it. Also, while writing this reply I realized I am choosing not to upgrade my internet connection (spend $ to solve problem?). Now, to answer you question: I *assume* it's a Comcast or WiFi issue (which I've always had, is not a recent thing)... My internet connection works well when I first connect and (almost?) always works eventually but can be very long latency after idle causing Tbird error messages and twice a lost message. Sometimes it seems only thing that works is to click on my Mac's WiFi icon, toggling it off then back on. For that reason (and probably because of a carry-over from the days when we were required to) I prefer to read and write messages offline. Previously, when Tbird seemed to handle this well, I only had to go on/offline twice to read, write and send email. Details: I share my landlady's connection, it comes with my apartment. I have learned that her Modem+WiFi combo was provided by Comcast as part of a special offer. But I should point out I don't really know if cause is Comcast, the WiFi, or something wrong at my end but because I experience same problem with Firefox, I assume my Tbird network settings are ok. And for sure there *is* a relationship between typical neighborhood internet primetime (evenings) and the latency issue and the need to toggle WiFi off/on to get it to "wake-up". Thanks for your help NicSteve
