Hi all,

I have a simple problem:

My IMAP server offers only 1GB Quota and i wanna keep a local copy of all my msgs in my PCs HD (off line) before i let them be deleted on the server. A folder called "Local Folder" is not present in my system.

I've tried the usual things recommended online:

Attempt 1:

Edit > Account settings > Copies & Folders > Message archives

But here all archive options are inside one of my remote accounts.

Attempt 2:

I tried the Add-On "local folders", but did not work at all in my system.

Attempt 3:

The add-on "copy folder" does not says that it automaticly backup msgs.

Attempt 4:

If i right-click on the left panel (folders panel) and create a folder, there is only the option of placing it remotely. If i create some folder

and than right-click on it i cannot change its location.

Most important: the msgs should be saved automaticly in a local (offline) archive folder in my pcs HD.

Seems simple but nothing worked up to now. I enjoy your help!

When you view your emails do you have the Folder Pane visible (usually at the left)? If not, select View > Layout > Folder Pane. There, at the bottom of the list, you should see Local Folders. This is like an email account except that it's not tied to any email server or provider. Right-click on it and click 'new folder'. You should be able to create a new folder as a sub-folder of Local Folders. If you can do that, the folder you have just created is on your local machine, not on the server. You can use it (and others like it) for storage, archives etc. If you can't see Local Folders in the folder pane, read this: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Local_Folders Remember that once you have moved your messages to a local folder they are not backed up on a server any more, so you need to make regular safe backup copies of your Thunderbird profile.

So did you follow the advice I gave in case you can't see 'Local Folders'?

ok,

now i could create a local folder. Yeah!!!

Nxt step: setup archiving: I did:

Edit > Account settings > Copies & Folders > Message archives > "Archives" Folder on: LocalFolder (where LocalFolder is this folder just created)

Now i can right-click on individual msgs and "Archive" them. Great !!!

Now a question: Can i setup automatic archiving for msgs older than...?

Does this archiving delete msgs on the server? My quota usage did not diminish after archiving lots of msgs  :-/

Thx a lot!

Filters can not initiate n archive, but they can "move" so you can move to a local folder with a filter and archive latter when it suits you.

Does this archiving delete msgs on the server?

Archiving in the manner you describe involved an inherent move, so yes it does delete from server.

Right click the account and select settings. In server setting, ensure Cleanup ("Expunge") Inbox on exit is selected.

On the toolbar > File > compact folder to kick off the expunge. Until Thunderbird compacts the messages as marked as deleted and hidden, not removed so there is no change to the server side quota usage. Note here that the inherent move that forces a delete can see the mail moved to the server side trash and still occupy space, or on occasions occupying it twice, once as deleted in the original folder and again in the trash folder.
