It all started last night. I got an email ad from a retailer with a special I wanted to view on their website. I click on the link and firefox opens (since it is my default browser). But it just sits there with a blank screen with the little ball in the upper left-hand corner going round and round and it saying "connecting". But it does nothing and just sits there.

I close out of firefox, wait a few, then reopen firefox and try to navigate to a different website on my favorites list. Same problem: it just sits there with a blank screen with the little ball in the upper left-hand corner going round and round and it saying "connecting". But it does nothing and just sits there.

I did a "firefox refresh" and that fixed nothing.

I uninstalled firefox and then reinstalled it and it worked fine until today when I tried to click on another link embedded in a trusted retailer's email and firefox has hung up once again. It just sits there saying "connecting" but it does nothing. So far, 5 minutes and counting.

Connection is set to "No Proxy", in case you are wondering.

Chosen solution

This seems to be a current issue with 44: "users are reporting that firefox is stuck on "connecting" and never able to load any webpages + producing a windows crash report when the app is closed - it can generally be fixed by switching to 64bit firefox though."

So far no word on what causes this, so I can't suggest a solution, but could you try the 64-bit build in the meanwhile? https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/

If the 64-bit build works, then it's most likely this new issue and the best course is to stick with 43.x until the issue is resolved. The 64-bit browser is not fully developed yet, from what I hear (or features have been removed deliberately to improve the build).

Here are the general instructions for these connection issues, https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/firefox-cant-load-websites-other-browsers-can, but I think this is the 44 issue that is now surfacing.

Performed a system restore (created 1/24/16). After doing this, firefox began working, but it was version 43.?.

Firefox continued to work fine until it auto-updated to version 44.0. After updating to version 44.0, it continued to work for about 5 minutes but now it hangs and won't load webpages anymore.

SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH VERSION 44.0!

Hi there. Definitely seems 44 is not going down well in your setup - this is the first problem like this that I've seen, but 44 is still fresh.

Your crash reports seem to point to Flash either hanging or crashing, and the version number looks like it is the latest, so probably no updating to be done there. If you're willing to try again on 44, I would suggest starting with a plain Firefox without add-ons, or running Firefox in Safe Mode to see if it really is Flash (or hardware acceleration) at fault.

If you have a functional Firefox, back up your profile just in case: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/back-and-restore-information-firefox-profiles.

The other usual suspect that comes to mind is antivirus software, some of them REALLY hate new browser versions. What AV solution are you using?

Started in Safe Mode, no add-ons enabled. Still won't load ANY webpages. Hangs at "connecting" indefinitely.

MS Security Essentials

Uninstalled FireFox again. Reinstalled version 44.0. Worked for 10 seconds (loaded 2 web pages) and then hung. Now it's back to stuck on "connecting".

The 64-bit build seems to work with no problems.

Good to hear! It is a temporary workaround for 44 until the issue is found and fixed in a future version; if there are features missing from the 64-bit build, you can always use 43.0.4 in 32-bit.
